On July 11, Gyeonggi Province
announced that its free legal counselling service for alien residents has been
producing good results, such as helping employees receive overdue wages, and
therefore gaining positive public responses.

This system was launched in
2012 for alien residents in Gyeonggi Province who lacked access to legal aid when
encountering discrimination or blind spots in the Korean legal system. So far,
the system has handled 520 cases, among which 14 necessary cases received free
support for legal proceedings.

Along with its legal
counselling service, Gyeonggi Province is conducting on-site legal education in
order to eliminate blind spots in the Korean legal system for alien residents.
On July 10, Gyeonggi Province hosted its third on-site legal education and free
legal counselling session of the year at the Siheung Migrants Welfare Center.

Five attorneys affiliated with
the Gyeonggi Central Bar Association and two certified labor attorneys offered
their services at the counselling session as a form of talent donation. They
conducted customized legal education and provided legal counselling for such issues
as immigrant status and visa modification, wrongful dismissal, and overdue
wages to more than 120 alien residents living in the cities of Ansan and
Siheung.

At the counselling session, the
group decided to support three legal proceedings pertaining to married female
migrants of multicultural families and overdue wages.

A provincial government
official said,
Were reviewing the possibility of expanding the
service to more areas during the latter half of this year so as to ensure that alien
residents are not treated unfairly in terms of the legal system.

The free legal counselling
service for alien residents is available weekdays from 10:00am to 5:00pm at the
free legal counsel office at the Gyeonggi Provincial Government Comlpex in
Suwon. The office provides interpreter support in Japanese, English, Chinese,
Mongolian, and Vietnamese.
