analyze and prepare for the impact of the US election results on Gyeonggi

Gyeonggi
Province Governor Nam Kyung-pil seeks to analyze and respond to the impact of
US election results on Gyeonggi Province.
During
a meeting with Vice Governor Lee Jae-yul on the morning of November 10,
Gyeonggi Province Governor Nam Kyung-pil said, “We need to carefully analyze
and prepare for the impact of the US election results on Gyeonggi Province.” Governor Nam added, “We need to create a response
team led by the Vice Governor and prepare response measures.”
Governor
Nam also said, “Since President-elect Trump advocated a harder stance towards North Korea
and an increased allotment of defense expenditures throughout his campaign, our
national security will be affected.” Nam emphasized, “Given the fact that Gyeonggi
Province is home to a US military facilities with more than 18,000 American military
personnel, we need to meticulously prepare responses.”
Governor
Nam also commented that Trump used the Korea-US FTA as an example of unfair
trade deals during his campaign and asked his staff to prepare for potential
changes, saying, “Trump’s inclination towards trade protectionism, putting American interests at
the forefront, may lead to possible renegotiation of the Korea-US FTA.”
According
to the Gyeonggi Provincial Government, Korea has reaped substantial economic
benefits since the effectuation of the Korea-US FTA with annual manufacturing – including automobiles, electronics,
chemicals, and more – increasing KRW 1.7 trillion and generating KRW 560.9 million in trade
surpluses.
Based
on Governor Nam’s instructions, the provincial government will immediately create a task
force team led by the Vice Governor and featuring key divisions and departments
including the Planning & Coordination Office, Economy Office, Balanced
Development Office, and Gyeonggi Research Institute (GRI), as well as experts
in relevant fields, to draft response measures.
In
addition, the task force team, guided by GRI, will analyze the impact of the US
election results on each sector for Gyeonggi Province and report its findings.
After
the US election results came in on November 9, Governor Nam commentd on
Facebook, “I see substantial shifts in US government policies. If that is the case,
uncertainty will also rise.” Nam also commented, “The overall impact on our
society will also be significant. We must establish new external relationships
with our economic and security risks in mind. We must be determined and we need
to change in a substantial way.”
