Camp Greaves Emerging as Center of DMZ Tourism

Camp Greaves, a former US military facility located inside the Civilian Control Line (CCL), is emerging as the heart of DMZ tourism.
Until now, DMZ tourism programs consisted primarily of visits to attractions around Imjingak Pyeonghwanuri Park situated outside the CCL, such as the Third Tunnel and the Dora Observatory. However, with its location inside the CCL, Camp Greaves occupies a unique place where the natural environment and traces of the US military base have been preserved intact for approximately 10 years.
The exhibition “DMZ, Camp Greaves – Remembrance and Waiting,” which was planned for the restoration of the area, displays maps bearing official renderings of the Military Demarcation Line on the Korean Peninsula at the time of the signing of the Korean Armistice Agreement, as well as flags and other artifacts preserved by JSA’s Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission. Visitors can also tour the US military facilities, bowling alleys and showers, glimpsing traces of US military forces in Korea in the 1950s.
At the opening ceremony held at the old US army bowling alley, a 3D graffiti show, video reports presented on two large screens, and a papier-mâché panda exhibition will create a festive atmosphere that breaks away from old ceremonial formats.
Since Camp Greaves is renowned as a filming location for last year’s popular Korean drama Descendants of the Sun, a total of 17,000 people visited here that same year. That is three times more than the 5,711 visitors of 2014. Among the visitors, approximately 10,000 were foreigners, demonstrating the popularity of the site among overseas tourists.
1953 and 2004. Since it is about 2 kilometers from the DMZ, it allows visitors to see traces of US forces and the reality of Korean national division. The 101st Airborne Division of the 506th Infantry Regiment, which was the actual division of the regiment in the movie Saving Private Ryan, was actually stationed here.
