The Korea Ceramic Foundation opens the oak hill canola flower field in Gonjiam Ceramic Park on May 4 to coincide with the Gwangju Royal Ceramic Festival.

The oak hill canola flower field covers 9,900 square meters around an 18-meter high, 15-meter wide oak tree, estimated to be a hundred years old, that stands in the ceramic park. The field was re-landscaped at the beginning of this year and will open for the second time following last year. This year’s opening period occurs about 2 weeks earlier than last year, allowing visitors to more fully enjoy the blooming canola flowers.

To celebrate the opening of the canola flower field, the Korea Ceramic Foundation will hold a “truth mailbox” event that revives the symbolic meaning of oak hills. The “truth mailbox” is a free event in which people put a story such as a love pledge, wish, or letter in a mailbox and take a photo as proof.

Last week, the ceramic museum exhibition Joseon White Porcelain: Telling Stories about Life and the Afterlife and the Gwangju Royal Ceramic Festival opened simultaneously at the Gonjiam Ceramic Park, so visitors to the park can enjoy the exhibition and festival at the same time.

Of particular note, from May 4 to 6, when the canola flower field is expected to reach its peak, the ‘Gonjiam @ River Market,’ a handicraft and flea market usually held only on the weekend, will be extended for 3 days and many more attractions will be provided to those visiting the canola flower field.

Korea Ceramic Foundation Chair Seo Jeong-gurl said: “We hope that visitors on spring outings will be able to have a great time while fully enjoying the ceramic museum exhibition, Gwangju Royal Ceramics Festival, river market, and oak hill canola flower field in Gonjiam Ceramic Park.

Meanwhile, the Korea Ceramic Foundation will reorganize the Gonjiam Ceramic Park as an attractive tourist resource and debut it as a ceramic-specialized theme garden at the opening of the 2019 Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale.

The oak hill canola field in Gonjiam Ceramic Park is open until May 12 with free admission.
