Gyeonggi Province Governor Dong Yeon Kim visited Gwanggyo Techno Valley and expressed his ambition to “build Korea’s best biotech park in Gwanggyo.”
On January 8, Governor Kim held an on-site meeting to vitalize the future bio-industry at the Gyeonggi Bio Center of the Gyeonggido Business and Science Accelerator in Suwon City. This meeting was attended by more than 50 participants including lawmakers, Gwanggyo Techno Valley tenants, bio-experts and entrepreneurs.
Governor Kim said, “I have been envisioning a bio-cluster in Gwanggyo since I was president of Ajou University, and I am very happy that this dream is closer to reality… The bio-industry in Gyeonggi Province is divided among Gwanggyo, Siheung, Goyang, Seongnam and Hwaseong, and Gwanggyo Techno Valley is a base that connects these five locations. We will develop Gwanggyo as a place to nurture bio startups and create the best bio complex in Korea.”
He added, “Let’s work together to make Gwanggyo Techno Valley an exemplary and leading bio-industrial complex not only in Gyeonggi Province and Korea, but also internationally.”
Expressing his willingness to cooperate, attending National Assembly Member Park Gwang-on said, “The bio-industry centered around Gwanggyo Techno Valley will be the future provender of Korea… We will do our utmost to find ways in which to help, with the idea that the effect will be maximized if the central and local governments provide solid support,”.
On the same day, Kang Sung-cheon, President of the Gyeonggido Business and Science Accelerator, announced plans to shape Gwanggyo into a regional bio cluster in Gyeonggi Province by developing the site of the former Bio Organ Research Center in Gwanggyo Techno Valley to discover and nurture bio startups.
To this end, Gyeonggi Province plans to actively promote the training of advanced R&D professionals (500 per year), the incubation of bio startups (approximately 15 companies per year), and administrative procedures for developing related assets in Gyeonggi Province starting this year.
After the meeting, the attending experts and entrepreneurs freely discussed the development direction of the bio-industry and Gyeonggi Province’s role in strengthening international competitiveness.
Gwanggyo Techno Valley is a high-tech industrial complex located in Yi-dong, Yeongtong-gu, Suwon City, that houses more than 200 biotech and healthcare companies. The complex is home to the Gyeonggido Business and Science Accelerator, the Advanced Institutes of Convergence Technology, and the Korea Advanced Nano Fab Center, among others, and plays a key role in enhancing the competitiveness and value of Gyeonggi Province’s future growth industries.
