The Gyeonggi-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services will pioneer overseas markets for the export its newly developed rice varieties, Chamdrim and Matdrim, to Southeast Asia, the United States, and other countries. This is the first overseas promotion of Gyeonggi Province’s new rice varieties.
A marketing group for the export of new technologies and various agricultural products will engage in promotional activities from July 18 to 25 in Vietnam and Singapore, and from August 23 to 29 in the US.
Cultivation complexes for the new rice varieties in areas of Pyeongtaek and Gimpo, as well as seven companies that produce processed rice products in Gyeonggi Province, are participating in the promotional activities. The group will provide export consultations to more than 100 foreign buyers in three countries, and will hold sales promotion events in Singapore and Los Angeles.
Chamdrim and Matdrim, which are being promoted for export, are the first new rice varieties developed by the Gyeonggi-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services after more than 10 years of research. They are high-quality rice varieties suitable for the cultivation environment of the province and feature exceptional flavors. Thus, it is expected that these new varieties will replace Japanese varieties and satisfy the ever-evolving tastes of consumers.
Currently, the rice varieties are being cultivated on an area of 5,100 hectares in the province, which accounts for 6.7% of the total cultivation area. As these varieties are favored by farmers in Gyeonggi Province for their suitability for the local cultivation environment and their excellent flavors, continued expansion of the cultivation area is expected.
