Greetings, everyone, and thank you for joining us for this week’s edition of GTV.
I’m Don Valiant and this is the news from Gyeonggi Province this week.

Article 1. Gyeonggi Business Startup Project Realizes High Success Rate (160816-1)
[Anchor’s Headline] The G-Business Startup Project run by the Gyeonggi Small & Medium Business Center – which provides business ideas of high potential with financial, educational and operational support – has achieved remarkable success in realizing business launches.

▶ Portable Toilet Developer, Yongin City
Realizing the usefulness and business potential of portable lavatories, Kim (김연식) developed one that can be used in emergency situations. However, he was unsuccessful in finding sufficient funds to start the business… until he joined the G-Business Startup Project.

“I received financial support which in itself was a great help. However, what helped me more was the subsequent mentoring and educational support.”
Financial difficulties and ignorance of business startup procedures are the greatest challenges faced by those preparing business launches.
With comprehensive provincial support, Kim was able to commercialize his product and achieved exports of KRW 200 million to Nepal and India this year.
▶ 70% of G-Business Startup Project Participants Succeeded in Business Launch
Out of more than 1,700 individuals who benefited from the G-Business Startup Project, approximately 70 percent have successfully launched their businesses. Such a remarkable achievement is attributed to the provision of customized support for individual business ideas.

“Many of these individuals face difficulties with business startup procedures. Our program will guide them through to successful business launches.”
Even after successful business launches, provincial support will continue by linking these new enterprises with their predecessors so as to ensure the sustainability of their businesses.

Article 2. Gyeonggi Reaffirms Its Coalition Policy (160817-1)
[Anchor’s Headline] At a meeting with provincial assembly leaders, Gyeonggi Province Governor Nam Kyung-pil reaffirmed the continuation of his coalition policy during the second half of his term in office.

On August 16, Governor Nam met with provincial assembly leaders and had an informal discussion on the past and future of the current administration.
During the meeting, the Governor Nam reaffirmed the continuation of his coalition policy and asked the provincial assembly members for their cooperation.

“I am pursuing the continued realization of coalition for the second half of my term. I hope that such endeavors will help establish a stable foundation for cooperative relations between the Gyeonggi Provincial Administration and the Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly.”
Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly Chairman Jeong Gi-yeol (정기열) offered assurances of his continuing efforts to lay the cornerstone of the province and asked the opposition party for continued dialogue based on the coalition agreement.

“I look forward to positive outcomes that will benefit all provincial residents from provincial assembly activities through dialogue with the provincial administration, between the parties, and among committee leaders.”
Governor Nam offered assurances of his bipartisan efforts in realizing provincial policies in cooperation with the provincial assembly during his remaining time in office.

Article 3. Exhibition of Olympics Memorabilia Held in Suwon (160816-3)
[Anchor’s Headline] While the Olympic Games are underway, a permanent exhibition that showcases Olympic memorabilia at a local museum in Suwon (수원) City is receiving special attention.

– United North-South Korea Team at 41st World Table Tennis Championships
The table tennis rackets and the flag used by the first-ever united South and North Korean team at the 1991 World Table Tennis Championships recall the emotional drama of the time when the team won the gold medal.
– Bronze Helmet Received by Marathon Gold Medalist in 1936 (National Treasure No.904)
This bronze helmet is a replica of the original that was presented to the Korean marathon gold medalist at the Berlin Olympics in 1936.
– 1988 Seoul Olympics Memorabilia
There are also a collection of memorabilia from the 1988 Seoul Olympics including the mascot tiger, Hodori (호돌이), and a Olympic torch used at the time.

“This exhibition reminds me of the 1988 Seoul Olympics and inspires me to support our athletes in the current Olympic Games more. Go, Korea!” “Go!”

▶ Olympic Games Memorabilia 1972 to 1996
This exhibition also features the autographs of Korean Olympic medalists and a variety of historic items as well as the history of the Olympics from the 1972 Munich Games to the 1996 Atlanta Games.

“I see viewers reminiscing about past events, and others relating memories to their children. It would be nice to take time to learn about Korean sports history and how our athletes have worked hard …”
The Olympics Memorabilia Exhibition is open permanently at the Suwon Gwangyo (수원 광교) Museum from 9 am to 6 pm daily. Admission is free for children and seniors.

Article 4. Gyeonggi Launches Heat Damage Control Task Force Teams (160816-2)
[Anchor’s Headline] The continuing heat wave in Korea is not only affecting humans but livestock as well. With the number of animals perishing from the heat increasing rapidly, Gyeonggi Province has organized task force teams to control the situation.

▶ Korean Cow Farm, Anseong City
The cows on this farm are panting desperately under the scorching heat. Large electric fans and water sprayers simply cannot dispel the hot air fast enough.
▶ Non-Sweat Chickens, Ducks and Pigs More Vulnerable to Heat.
Chickens, ducks and pigs do not perspire and so are especially vulnerable to heat and dying in large numbers.

“When temperature rises, the breathing of animals becomes faster. If the temperature rises above certain point, they begin to die. There is nothing else we can do other than to run foggers over them to lower their body temperatures.”
An increasing number of heat-related casualties are being reported in Korea.
[CG-Overlap] The number of heat-related human casualties this summer exceeded 1,500, of which 276 were in Gyeonggi Province.
[CG-Overlap] The number of livestock animals perishing in the province surpassed 317,000 at 130 farms.
[CG] To date, more than 315,000 chickens, 1,000 ducks and nearly 500 pigs have died due to the heat.
▶ Gyeonggi Province Mobilizes Heat Damage Control Task Force Teams
To minimize heat casualties among humans and animals, Gyeonggi Province began mobilizing Heat Damage Control Task Force teams.

“The duration of the excessive heat wave so far this year is 31 days, twice that of last year. We have formed five task force teams from 10 divisions so as to quickly respond to situations …”

▶ Close Monitoring and Treatment of Heat Wave Sufferers
During the warm weather, Gyeonggi Province also closely monitors individuals in underprivileged situations by telephone, and operates more than 200 Call & Cool ambulances.

Article 5. Gyeonggi Submits 3rd Revised Supplementary Budget Plan (160817-2)
[Anchor’s Headline] On August 16, Gyeonggi Province announced a revised supplementary budget plan amounting to KRW 22.3 trillion, and submitted that plan to the Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly for approval.

This is the third supplementary budget plan made by the current Gyeonggi administration.
▶ Revised Supplementary Budget KRW 22.3 Trillion
This revised supplementary budget plan is greater than the second plan by KRW 2.5 trillion.
▶ Supplementary Budget with Priority on Job Creation
The largest portion of the supplementary budget is allocated for local economy promotion through job creation.

“KRW34.9 will be allocated for local economy promotion including job creation. More specifically, we intend to use KRW 12.4 billion for small and medium business support projects.”

▶ KRW 130 Billion for Transport Infrastructure
KRW 130 billion of the supplementary budget is earmarked for transport infrastructure improvement including double-decker bus imports and road construction projects.
▶ KRW 31.2 Billion for Fire & Safety Projects
KRW 31.2 billion was allocated for fire and safety projects such as anti-crime CCTV installations, anti-flood and drought projects, and the reinforcement of fire personnel.
▶ KRW 68.6 Billion for Welfare & Childcare Services
For childcare and other welfare services, a total of KRW 68.6 billion was allocated.
When approved by the Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly, Gyeonggi Province’s third revised supplementary budget will be finalized on September 9.

Article 6. Chrysanthemum Breeds Developed by Gyeonggi Institute (160817-3)
[Anchor’s Headline] The Gyeonggi Agricultural Research & Extension Services – or GARES – has developed new chrysanthemum breeds that have high warm weather tolerance, and showcased the breeds on August 10.

Chrysanthemums are among the most popular flowers in Korea. GARES developed these breeds to help the provincial floricultural industry overcome difficulties caused by warm weather that negatively affects flowering plants.

“We have been heavily dependent on expensive foreign breeds. However, an increasing number of new domestic breeds are being introduced and help floricultural farmers better satisfy the needs of consumers…”

▶ New Breeds Tolerant to Warm Weather
The chrysanthemum breeds that were introduced at this show were presented in the form of both cut and potted flowers. The flowers were professionally assessed by specialists including more than thirty floricultural farmers. Those selected at the show will be subject to additional floricultural property tests before being supplied to flower farms.

“The productivity of flower farms has decreased rapidly due to the heat wave. We developed the breeds that can grow well and produce marketable, colorfast quality even in warm weather …”

▶ GARES Helps Floricultural Industry Save Royalty Payments
GARES previously introduced 36 chrysanthemum breeds and has helped the domestic floricultural industry save more than KRW 300 million in royalty payments.

Article 7. 8th DMZ Korean International Documentary Festival (0818)
[Anchor’s Headline] On August 17, a month prior to the opening of the eighth DMZ Korean International Documentary Festival, organizers held a press conference to announce the detailed programs of this year’s event, which will run for eight days in Gyeonggi Province.

This year, a total of 1,290 films from 105 nations were submitted for consideration. Of this record-high number, 116 films have been selected for screening during the festival at four locations in the province. That Day by Korean director Jeong Su-eun (정수은), who received the New Documentary Producer Award last year, was selected as the opening film.

▶ ‘DMZ Vision’ Category Included This Year
This year’s event includes a special category titled ‘DMZ Vision’ that focuses on the reality of national division and the outlook for reunification.
▶ Documentaries on Japanese Military Sexual Slavery to be Featured
For the first time in Korea, this year’s festival will also feature documentaries produced in Japan, China and Taiwan about Japanese military sexual slavery.

“This Japanese documentary was made in the 1970s and will be screened for the first time in Korea. This film features a Korean lady who became the first to open up and give testimony.”
There will also be special events aimed at promoting documentary viewing among the public.
▶ Specialists in Different Cultural Fields to Participate as Curators
This year’s festival will be assisted by specialists in different cultural fields who will introduce films as curators.

“Gyeonggi Province is proud that the DMZ Korean International Documentary Festival is unique in the world, and will continue to provide utmost support for the festival.”
Featuring documentaries at cinemas in three cities and a county of Gyeonggi Province, the eighth DMZ Korean International Documentary Festival will run for eight days from September 22.
