I’m Don Valiant and this is the news from Gyeonggi Province this week.
Article 1. Gyeonggi Campaigns for Public Alertness for Child Abuse (160517-2)
[Anchor’s Headline] In the Family Month of May, Gyeonggi Province launched a street campaign under the name of “Respond to Signals from Children” so as to promote active public involvement in the prevention of child abuse.
▶ Suwon Station Plaza (May 16)
Campaigners wearing the catch phrase of the campaign explain to passing members of the public the necessity for active reaction to signals that suggest child abuse in their neighborhoods. People are also invited to join in support programs for abused children.
▶ Seo Eun-ha / Osan City Resident
“I haven’t given much thought about child abuse. I didn’t know the situation was that serious… I will be alert from now on.”
▶ “Pay Attention and Report”, Campaigners Urge
More than 100 personnel from child protection organizations and Gyeonggi police agencies took to the streets to encourage the public to pay attention to and actively report child abuse cases.
▶ Lee Eun-mi / Police Sergeant, South Gyeonggi Provincial Police Agency
“Displays of nervousness and defensive behavior by children can be the first signs of abuse. (When you encounter such children), do not hesitate to call 112. We will do our utmost to convey these children from darkness to a brighter world.”
Although identifying child abuse cases is not easy, especially since most abusers are parents, it is the general public sentiment that child abuse is the problem of others that prevents people from reporting such cases.
▶ Gyeonggi Province Social Integration Vice Governor Lee Ki-woo
“It is important that people around abused children pay attention and be aware that it is their duty to report cases. We are using various methods to promote public involvement in child protection.”
In addition to outdoor campaigns, promotional methods will also include video productions regarding the rights of children and the responsibilities of the public.
Article 2. Eastern Gyeonggi Children Dietary Education Center Opens (160520-3)
[Anchor’s Headline] There are a number of dietary education centers in Gyeonggi Province that promote good dietary habits and food safety awareness among children. However, all such centers are located far from eastern provincial regions.
▶ Dietary Education Center for Children, Anyang City
These centers provide education from the perspective of children through various experiential programs that help children associate health and food safety with good dietary habits and encourage them to change unhealthy behaviors.
▶ All Centers Located outside of Eastern Gyeonggi Province
In order to address high demand for the services of such centers, as evidenced by 68,000 visits by children last year, Gyeonggi Province plans to establish an additional center, this time in an eastern region.
▶ [PiP] Han Yeong-hui / Director, Icheon City Public Health Center
“Children in the eastern provincial regions have had to travel more than an hour to use any of the four dietary education centers.”
▶ New Center to be Established in Icheon City
Icheon (이천) City, therefore, has been selected as the host of the new center.
▶ Icheon Environmental Education Center (May 19)
▶ Public Meeting for Steering of Dietary Education Centers for Children
For effective operation of the new center, Gyeonggi Province invited specialists in related fields to a preliminary public meeting and gathered their opinions. Since this center will be located within the Icheon (이천) Environmental Education Center, specialists agreed that the new center will benefit from existing educational facilities.
▶ Gyeonggi Province Social Integration Vice Governor Lee Ki-woo
“I think experiential programs are important for the dietary education of children. We will develop systematic education programs from the perspective of children.”
The Icheon (이천) Dietary Education Center for Children is slated to open in October this year.
Article 3. Gyeonggi Arranges SME Product Promotion at Large Supermarkets (160519-3)
[Anchor’s Headline] With cooperation from a large supermarket chain, Gyeonggi Province arranged for SMEs run by women entrepreneurs to promote their products at supermarkets, providing an excellent opportunity for these enterprises to connect with consumers.
▶ XX Supermarket, Yongin City
At this crowded supermarket, an unusual SME product display attracts the attention of shoppers. Many shoppers stop to examine summer baby clothes made with rayon and are impressed by the softness. The salespersons are busy answering questions.
▶ [PIP] Kim Chang-hwan / Shopper
“Baby products these days have good functionality and come in various designs. Having two children myself, I’ll take this opportunity to get some good products.”
▶ Free Use of Large Supermarket Floors
This event, which was arranged by the Gyeonggi Women’s Development Center, is also an opportunity for SMEs to showcase their products at large supermarkets free of rental fees. Considering the extreme difficulties faced by SMEs in marketing through large supermarkets, this is also a golden opportunity that can lead to regular business transactions with supermarkets.
▶ Jin Ji-yeong / SME Representative
“This event enables us to know where we stand through interactions with consumers and event organizers. It also gives us an opportunity to secure business transactions with supermarkets.”
This SME product promotion event began this past February and will run again in August and November.
▶ [PiP] Cho Jeong-ok / Director, Gyeonggi Women’s Development Center
“We will expand these events for women entrepreneurs by involving more large supermarkets. We will also expand our on-site business education services for more women entrepreneurs.”
Product promotion at large supermarkets will serve as a starting point in securing new market channels for SMEs with relatively limited marketing capabilities.
Article 4. Gyeonggi Institute Releases 500 Endangered Golden Frogs (160520-2)
[Anchor’s Headline] After a number of failed attempts, the Gyeonggi Agricultural Research and Extension Services eventually succeeded in breeding endangered golden frogs and recently released 500 young frogs into the environment.
▶ Imjin Riverside Peace Swamp (May 13)
These 500 frogs were released in an undisturbed wetland area north of the Civilian Control Line. Golden frogs used to be one of the most common frogs in Korea. However, these indigenous frogs have almost disappeared and are now on the verge of extinction, primarily due to development and agricultural chemical use.
▶ Han Myeong-hui / Income Resource Research Center, GARES
“We began golden frog breeding program using an artificial environment, since their natural habitat has been completely destroyed.”
The golden frogs are hard to breed artificially since they require precise breeding conditions.
▶ GARES Succeeds in Breeding Golden Frogs
After three years of repeated failures, the institute finally succeeded in breeding golden frogs by creating an environment with precisely the same conditions as their natural habitat.
▶ [PiP] Lee Jin-gu / Research Official, GARES
“We added a large amount of aquatic plants in the artificial habitat. At first, we faced great difficulties since tadpoles didn’t eat any ordinary tadpole feed. Thanks to guidance from Professor Park of Kangwon University, however, we could find a formula that worked.”
The 500 young golden frogs that had been successfully bred were released in a remote wetland after a two-week wildlife adaptation period.
▶ [PiP] Park Dae-sik / Professor, Kangwon University
“The fact that the golden frogs have found this swamp habitable is meaningful in that they can now play a role in creating ecological foundations for other species in the area.”
According to specialists, the golden frogs may be the key to the ecological recovery of the environment in which they live.
▶ GTV Reporter Lee Ye-sol
“Let us hope that the 500 golden frogs released today will become the first generation of their species that will thrive around the Peace Swamp of the Imjin River. Gyeonggi GTV, Lee Ye-sol.”

▶ Danyl Baev M.D., Neurosurgeon, Khabarovsk Hospital II

The international medical specialist training program of Gyeonggi Province ultimately aims to establish an international medical exchange network through which the province’s advanced medical technologies are promoted as well as exported.
Article 7. Gyeonggi to Expand Electric Car Charging Infra (0525-2)
[Anchor’s Headline] While the number of electric cars has been increasing steadily in Korea, there is a significant lack of charging facilities. Gyeonggi Province, therefore, plans to establish more charging stations.
Since Seo (서현종) switched to an electric car two years ago, he has saved considerably in terms of fuel costs. However, traveling a long distance is not an option since he can face a dire situation if the battery dies en route.
▶ Seo Hyun-jong / Electric car Owner
“I don’t have charging station maps nor can I make one myself. The possibility of the car stopping in the middle of a journey always is a big worry, and I would still do not know where the nearest charging station is if that happens.”
Such inconvenience stems from the improvement rate of charging service availability failing to keep pace with increasing demand.
▶ Gyeonggi Province Establishes Fast-Charge Stations
Gyeonggi Province will establish additional fast-charging facilities so as to alleviate this imbalance.
▶ GTV Reporter Choi Ji-hyun
“With a normal charger, it takes 5 hours to fully charge a car battery. However, a fast charger will supply energy enough for a 100-km journey in just 20 minutes.”
▶ Suwon & Seongnam Chosen for Initial Fast Charger Installations
For initial installations, a number of public sites in the cities of Suwon (수원) and Seongnam (성남) have been chosen since these areas provide easy access in all directions.
▶ Oh Jae-yeong / Director, Gyeonggi Province Climate & Air Quality Management Division
“We plan to install 10 fast chargers in strategic locations in Suwon and Seongnam with operations targeted from August.”
Gyeonggi Province will continue establishing fast-charging stations in more areas after these initial installations. There are 56 fast chargers – all installed by the Ministry of Environment – currently operating in the province.
