Greetings, everyone, and thank you for joining us for this week’s edition of GTV.
I’m Don Valiant and this is the news from Gyeonggi Province this week.

Article 1. Gyeonggi Offers Nutrition Education for Expectant Moms (160426-3)
[Anchor’s Headline] Gyeonggi Province has been operating a nutrition education program for pregnant women. This program, titled “Good Dietary Habits of Pregnant Women”, is being provided at a number of public health centers free of charge on an application basis.

When Kim (김지은) entered her fourth week of pregnancy, she became more conscious about nutrition. However, she had no idea what dietary habits would be good for her baby and how she should modify her food preparation.

“I wanted to change to a healthier diet, but I didn’t know how. I didn’t know if my usual diet was too salty or too sweet or if my daily nutrient intakes were appropriate…”

▶ ‘Good Dietary Habits of Pregnant Women’ Program
This education program is comprised of four sessions that cover healthy daily nutrient intakes, especially the use of salt and sugar, as well as healthy ingredients and cooking.
▶ Self-Assessment of Personal Tastes
Education also includes blind self-assessments of personal tastes and follow-up consultation with the instructor based on results.

“My taste was found to be on the salty side. This education enabled me to know my personal tastes more specifically and to become aware of the points that I need to keep watching.”

▶ Healthy Diet Promotion for Pregnant Women
There are also other healthy diet promotional events for pregnant women being organized by Gyeonggi Province that showcase healthy dishes.

“Nutritional conditions and dietary habits of expectant mothers are critical for the health of unborn babies. Good dietary habits are essential for both babies and mothers.”

▶ Education Open at Public Health Centers
Applications for the Good Dietary Habits of Pregnant Women education program are currently being received for the second session at three public health centers in Gyeonggi Province.

Article 2. Gyeonggi’s Indoor Vegetable Hydroponics Tested at Cafe (160427-3)
[Anchor’s Headline] Indoor hydroponic vegetable beds that were developed in Gyeonggi Province have been installed at a café in Seoul and have become popular with its patrons. These furniture-type vegetable beds occupy little space and have flexible, elegant designs to suit the indoor conditions.

Customers who enter this café are immediately surrounded by greens and feel as if they are in an exotic botanical garden. When a customer orders a salad, the server goes directly to the vegetable beds and harvests the vegetables while the customer watches in fascination.

“The best thing was that the salad was being prepared with the vegetables harvested in front of me, which was most unusual. I felt healthier when I left the place. With all those plants, the air also felt fresher.”
These vegetable beds are built-in hydroponic beds with customized space-saving designs.
▶ LEDs Supplement Illumination Required
Being indoor facilities, illumination and air supply are supplemented with LEDs and fans. Temperature and humidity as well as nutrient supply are controlled automatically.

“Sales actually increased after the installation of the hydroponic beds. Customers appreciate being in this café as they appreciate both watching and eating greens…”

▶ Built-in Indoor Hydroponic Beds Developed by GARES
These hydroponic vegetable beds, developed by the Gyeonggi Agricultural Research and Extension Services, can be installed as wall units and even as drawers hidden inside the wall.

“These products can be designed as furniture or showcases to maximize space usage. They also have environmental controls for the healthy growth of plants.”
The Gyeonggi Agricultural Research and Extension Services now plans to introduce these indoor hydroponic vegetable beds to homes.

Article 3. Forest Parks in Gyeonggi Province (160429-2)
[Anchor’s Headline] The month May is Family Month in Korea. It is also the month during which most family outings occur. Gyeonggi Province abounds with good family travel destinations including some of the best forest parks in the nation that offer relaxation as well as entertaining experiences.

▶ Jangheung Jaseang Forest Park, Yangju City
When our reporter visited one such park in a northern provincial region, many families were already enjoying being in natural environment with loved ones.

“We are having a wonderful time picnicking in a forest and listening to birds singing with a swing nearby. Being in nature itself makes us happy. Even the smiles on my kid’s face look different.”
Armed with magnifying glasses and stethoscopes, children follow forest guides and are entertained by explanations and interesting stories about trees and flowers.

There is also an animal farm with various animals, plants and insects, as well as a workshop in which children can make their own souvenirs.

“I made my own souvenir, had a walk in the forest, and learned about many flowers. I want to travel with my family doing these things again.”
There are 17 registered forest parks in Gyeonggi Province.
▶ Ecological Park, Bucheon: Tulip Show & Outdoor Cinema
Deokpyeong Dinosaur Forest Park, Icheon: Dinosaur Park with Botanic Garden
Mulhyanggi Forest Park, Osan: Swamp with Aquatic Botanic Garden
The ecological park in Bucheon (부천) City currently features a tulip show and an outdoor cinema, and a dinosaur forest park in Icheon (이천) City is popular among children, while a provincial forest park in Osan (오산) City offers quiet relaxation in a natural wetland environment.
During the past long weekend that included Children’s Day, many children and their families ventured out to forest parks in Gyeonggi Province.
Article 4. Gyeonggi Introduces Rice Dish Recipes (160503-3)
[Anchor’s Headline] The Gyeonggi Agricultural Research and Extension Services opened rice cooking classes so as to introduce recipes that the institute has developed using rice as a primary ingredient.

▶ Institute of Traditional Korean Food
These recipes are currently being introduced at cooking classes offered by the institute.
▶ Rice Dish Cooking Classes
Under the guidance of a renowned cooking instructor, attendees learn how to prepare snacks, delicacies and dishes using rice or rice powder.

“I learned how to make rice snacks. I think I will make them often at home.”

▶ Recipes for Rice Delicacies, Rice Vinegar and Steamed Rice Variants
More than twenty rice recipes that can easily be made at home are being introduced including those for natural rice vinegar and nutritious steamed rice variants.

“These recipes look healthy because they use natural ingredients without chemical additives.”
The classes also include a visit to the Rice Museum so as to provide a better understanding of the benefits of rice. These classes are part of Gyeonggi Province’s rice promotion programs.

“The Western influence in our diet is causing decreased rice consumption. We designed these classes so as to promote the use of rice through various recipes.”

▶ Rice Cooking Education Targets Rural Women Leaders
The attendees of these classes are women leaders from rural areas in Gyeonggi Province.
After completing the classes, these women will transfer what they have learned to more than 10,000 members of regional women societies. Meanwhile, GARES will continue to develop new rice recipes.

Article 5. Gyeonggi Gubernatorial Residence Remodeled as Guest House (160427-2)
[Anchor’s Headline] Remodeling work on the Gyeonggi gubernatorial residence, which has served provincial governors for the past 47 years, was finally completed. The place has now reopened as a guest house complete with a café and cultural facilities for public use.

▶ ‘Good Morning House’ Opening Ceremony (April 26)
Titled ‘Good Morning House’, this guest house that neighbors a new, downsized governor’s residence is located in a natural environment at the foot of Paldal (팔달) Mountain. This house also features displays of provincial relics and memorabilia of former governors that reflect the history of Gyeonggi Province.

“It is a picturesque house. I am glad we have such beautiful place for all to use and enjoy.”

▶ Outdoor Weddings and Cultural Events
This house has a large lawn that can be used for cultural events and performances as well as outdoor weddings.

“Come to our concert if you wish to have a special time outdoors in a lovely environment instead of being a member of serious audience.”
The café across from the guest house serves foods made with Gyeonggi farm products and is operated by a social enterprise.

“This place was originally meant for the governor’s use only. However, I decided to share it with our residents. I hope many residents will come and have a good time here.”
The Good Morning House, with its cultural, historic and artistic offerings, will quickly become a popular destination among Gyeonggi Province residents.

Article 6. Gyeonggi to Upgrade Data Services through Integration (160428-3)
[Anchor’s Headline]
Gyeonggi Province announced the improvement of its public information services through the integration of data sources. This initiative will greatly enhance the convenience and usability of information currently available to the public.

Instead of having to log in to different public organizations for particular data types, users will now be able to access necessary information from difference sources, such as land transaction and construction permit data, via a single channel.

“It has been extremely tedious and time-consuming to gather data from difference sources; I often didn’t even know where to get the information I needed…”

▶ Integrated Information Services
Such inconvenience will be eliminated when integrated data services open. In addition to integrated information provision in 24 categories, ranging from demographic and commercial statistics to social information, these services will also have add-on features such as information availability notification services and visual data presentations.

“We expect that these services will better satisfy the public’s right to know while enabling easier and more convenient access to information.”

Information can be accessed via the homepages of Gyeonggi Province and will be updated on a monthly basis.
Gyeonggi Province plans to expand these information services by adding national information from central government agencies.

Article 7. Gyeonggi Establishes Smart Production Research Center (160502-3)
[Anchor’s Headline] Following the recent awarding of Korean government support for smart production research services, Gyeonggi Province now plans to establish a research center for the customized development of smart production processes for manufacturing enterprises.

▶ Auto Part Enterprise, Hwaseong City
At this auto part plant, a robot issues process approval based on automatic molten steel temperature measurements. Progress at each production step is controlled and recorded by a designated computer based on set values. Every finished product is traceable throughout the process.
▶ Smart Manufacturing Technologies
This smart manufacturing plant was established six years ago by combining original production processes with information and communication technologies.

“Since we switched to smart manufacturing, production quality improved significantly while defect ratios decreased greatly. Our sales also increased 50% over the past 5 years.”

▶ Gyeonggi Province to Establish Smart Production Research Center
With central government support, Gyeonggi Province will establish smart production research facilities so as to promote smart production processes among manufacturing enterprises.
These research facilities will undertake customized development and test operations of smart production processes.

“Pre-installation test operations will minimize errors and ensure the effectiveness of the processes in terms of both workability and productivity improvement.”
Through smart production support, Gyeonggi Province will help industries to localize production technologies and grow.
