Greetings, everyone, and thank you for joining us for this week’s edition of GTV.

I’m Don Valiant and this is the news from Gyeonggi Province this week.

Article 1. Gyeonggi Province to Rationalize School Uniform Costs (0812-1)

On August 11, Gyeonggi Province, the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education and the Gyeonggi Textile Industries Association signed an agreement at the Gyeonggi Provincial Government Complex for the production of quality school uniforms at low prices.

Signing of ‘Good School Uniform Agreement’

Gyeonggi Province initiated this agreement so as to alleviate cost burdens from parents by supplying well designed school uniforms of quality at reduced prices. The majority of school uniforms are currently being sold by large enterprises at high prices.

One notable feature of these forty designs is that they use knitted fabric.

▶ Knitted School Uniforms Cost 60 to 70% of Current Brand Prices

School uniforms using finely knitted fabrics of Gyeonggi Province are higher in quality and cost only 60 percent of the price of current brands.

▶ SMEs to Participate in Knitted Fabric School Uniform Production

This agreement will also enable small and medium textile manufacturers to participate in the KRW 75 billion school uniform market.

The ‘Good School Uniform’ project of Gyeonggi Province is the first case of the realization of Gyeonggi Province’s coalition in education. New school uniforms will be introduced after a reference meeting with parents and a fashion show in November.

Article 2. Gyeonggi Province Operates Online Parent Coaching Class

An online coaching class for the parental guidance of children opened in Gyeonggi Province. This class aids parents in providing their children with proper guidance based on their children’s aptitudes.

Kim, the mother of a seven-year-old daughter, is concerned about what her daughter is interested in and how to guide her to realize her potential. Recently, she learned about an online coaching class that helps parents do just that.

▶ Online ‘Parental Guidance Coaching’ Class

This class was opened in 2013 so as to address increasing demand among parents for parental guidance education.

This class teaches parents how to identify their children’s aptitudes, plan for proper guidance and utilize different emotional approaches to nurture their children’s potential.

“We provide parents with detailed education about methods of identifying aptitudes of and communicating with their children. We also help them practice their skills through case studies.”

▶ Graduates May Work as Aptitude Guidance Counselors

Those parents who complete the course may apply for a certificate and work as volunteer counselors.

Applications for the class are being received via the online education homepage of the Gyeonggi Women’s Development Center.

Article 3. Residual Chemical Inspections of Green Vegetables (0811)

Over the past month, with increasing fresh vegetable consumption during the summer, Gyeonggi Province has been conducting residual agricultural chemical inspections of green vegetables.

Grilled meat wrapped in lettuce and other green vegetables is one of the most popular outdoor menu choices among Koreans during vacation.

“I went to a supermarket to buy summer fruits and vegetables before going to a mountain valley with my family.”

▶ Gyeonggi Province Conducts Green Vegetable Inspections

During inspections, provincial inspectors uncovered violations of agricultural chemical residue limits in five cases.

“We confiscated and stopped the distribution of vegetables at five locations where excessive residual chemicals were detected.”

Residual chemicals can pose health hazards, especially when consumed outdoors where vegetables may not be thoroughly washed.

“Washing fruits and vegetable isn’t complicated work. A little more care can ensure safety.”

▶ Soak in Water for 2 to 3 Minutes before Washing

It is best to leave vegetables in water for 2 to 3 minutes before washing them in flowing water. It is important to wash residual soil from the stems

The green vegetable inspections will continue during the peak fresh vegetable consumption season until the end of August.

Article 4. Safety Inspections of Children’s Amusement Facilities (0812)

During the summer vacation season, Gyeonggi Province is conducting safety inspections at amusement facilities for children.

This mini train is filled with young passengers who are wide-eyed with excitement. Riding the train alone is safe for any child older than 12 months, but parents never stop worrying about their safety.

▶ Gyeonggi Province Conducts Amusement Facilities Inspections

Safety inspections are being conducted at indoor amusement facilities as well as outdoor amusement parks that many children visit during the summer. Inspectors meticulously check fastenings, safety belts and other safety fixtures for any defects or loose connections.

“We look at structural safety as well as auxiliary facilities such as lifts, electrical tems and fire equipment to ensure the safety of children.”

▶ Violation of Safety Regulations Subject to Penalty

Minor defects require immediate remedies, while serious violations of safety regulations are subject to a penalty of up to KRW 5 million.

Gyeonggi Province is conducting frequent and intensive safety inspections of amusement facilities during the vacation periods in August and December.

Article 5. 70th Anniversary of Liberation of Korea (0812)

Korea is commemorating the 70th anniversary of national liberation from Japanese occupation. Korean national flags can be seen everywhere.

▶ Suwon World Cup Stadium

In front of the Suwon World Cup Stadium, a large national flag was erected for public viewing. This flag is an 800-piece puzzle, with each piece bearing a wish written by a citizen during the cherry blossom festival earlier this year.

“I though national flags are made with cloth. This puzzle flag looks great. People are taking photos of it.”

Throughout Gyeonggi Province, national flags were hung along roads and at many public places. Sports stadiums were also decorated with large flags.

“This year marks the 70th anniversary of liberation as well as the 70th anniversary of the division of the nation. Many citizens are visiting Imjingak to convey wishes for national reunification,”

To commemorate this anniversary of the national liberation, Gyeonggi Province launched a Korean flag hanging campaign.

“This year marks the 70th anniversary of national liberation. We organized a variety of Korean flag events to commemorate the occasion.”

This year’s National Liberation Day saw a large number of Korean flags hung on large buildings as well as houses and roads.

Article 6. 7th DMZ Korean International Documentary Festival (0812)

With the annual DMZ Korean International Documentary Festival one month away, a preliminary program including an exhibition opened to provide the public with an overview of the new documentary films to be featured in the festival. The program also includes previews of some films.

▶ ‘A Song from the North’ by Yu Sun-mi (2014)

Instead of documenting political facts, the film titled ‘A Song from the North’ depicts the thoughts of North Koreans. This film includes actual scenes of North Korea that its director filmed during his visit to the north.

▶ ‘Censored Voice’ by Mo Lushai (2015)

Through the voices of Kibbutz residents who returned from the war, the film ‘Censored Voice’ criticizes the true identity of Israel hidden behind the 6-Day War in 1967 that ended with Israel occupying the Gaza Strip in Sinai and the West Bank of Palestine.

Since its first occasion in 2009, the DMZ documentary festival has evolved to include not only the conflicts symbolized by the DMZ, but also broader issues such as those regarding the environment, poverty and seniors.

This year’s festival will feature a 70th Liberation Anniversary Special Exhibition and a collection of ten-second video clips of individuals talking about the division of the two Koreas as well as a guidance program to provide a better understanding of the films featured in the festival.

“We prepared a new documentary guidance program so as to help the public better understand the documentaries since the public may find some documentaries difficult to appreciate.”

▶ The 7th DMZ Korean International Documentary festival (September 17 to 24)

The festival will run for eight days from September 17 beginning with an opening ceremony held at Camp Greaves beside the Imjin (임진) River. During the festival, more than a hundred documentary films from thirty nations will be shown.

Article 7. Gyeonggi Develops Rice Bread Baking Method (0731)

The Gyeonggi Agricultural Research and Extension Services, or GARES, developed a rice bread baking method as an alternative to wheat breads that produce more sugar than rice does. This technology was recently transferred to a private enterprise for practical applications.

This bakery features a variety of rice breads including black sesame bread, brown rice bread, sweet bean bread and many others.

“I don’t digest wheat breads well. Rice breads, however, have a good texture, taste good and are easier to digest, so I visit this bakery often.”

With the rice bread baking method developed by GARES, the residents of Gyeonggi Province can now enjoy these soft breads. The key ingredient of rice bread is a fermenting solution using microorganisms that prevent hardening.

“Without rice fermenting microorganisms, bread hardens fast. However, our new breads are now receiving good responses from consumers.”

Baking is simple. Just use the fermenting solution to make dough in the same way as with wheat breads.

“We developed the rice bread baking method to promote the consumption of rice and increase farmer income levels.”

Rice breads prepared through fermentation not only have added value and increase farmer income, but also provide a healthy alternative to wheat breads.
