Article 1. Tunnel Fire Disaster Response & Safety Drill (0522-1)

Korean safety authorities have been supervising regional disaster management training since 2005. In Gyeonggi Province, a tunnel fire disaster responsesafety drill was performed this month on the Yeongdong (영동) Expressway involvingrelated safety personnel. Our reporter was there.

A passenger car has broken down in the middle of a tunnel. The vehicles that followed, including trucksbuses, rear-endcrash one after the other. Soon fire breaks outheavy smoke fills the tunnel. Responding to emergency calls, police carsfire engines arriveimmediately block trafficevacuate travelers controlling the fire.

This simulated accident, hypothetically involving ten vehiclesnearly a hundred casualties, was staged for tunnel fire disaster safety controlcoordinated management training.

A total of twenty-six related organizations participated in this national-scale disaster responsesafety drill, the first organizedthe Korean Ministry of Public SafetySecurity since its establishment. As the host of the drill, Gyeonggi Province Governor Nam Kyung-pil presided over the entire processon-site disaster management to post-accident activities.

Two years ago, when national economic growth was slowing down, the Korean government adopted creative economy

Article 3. National Traffic Accident Reduction Movement (0527)

As part of the national traffic accident reduction movement, Gyeonggi Province held a public convention so as to promote safe traffic culture.

For the first time in many years, the number of traffic fatalities in Korea fell below 5,000 last year. However, the level of traffic safety in Koreastill lowest among OECD nations, with Gyeonggi Provincethe greatest number of fatalities in the nation.

There was also a display of traffic accident photos at the entrance to the convention site, as well as driving education programs for the safety of childrenseniors.
The national traffic accident reduction movement began in 1981. Gyeonggi Province plans to a safe trafficdriving culture through various endeavors so as to achieve its goal of reducing the annual number of traffic fatalities to less than 2.4 individuals per 10,000 vehicles.

Gyeonggi Province hosted former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroder, who led Germany through coalitioneconomic reformation after the nation’s reunification. During his visit, Schroder shared his experiencesinsights regarding post-reunification administration.

While expressing his positive impression of the coalition policies of Gyeonggi Province, Schroder said that such policies may spread throughout Korea. While in office, Schroder successfully led a bipartisan coalition in the resolution of political issues as well as effective administrative operations. He said that Gyeonggi Province has made remarkable achievements in its bipartisan coalition to date.

Article 5. Gyeonggi Library on Wheels (0526)

Gyeonggi Province has been operating a bus library for children in remote regions. Officially entitled ‘Gyeonggi Province Happy Book Bus’, this mobile library in a remodeled bus offers various reading programs in addition to an on-board free reading service.

A large, colorful bus that emanates an aura of fun rolls into the playground of a primary school. Children line upboard the bus with wide-eyed curiosity. Article 6. Farm InsectsAnimals Visit City Children (0528)

The mobile farm experience class of Gyeonggi Province received positive responseschildren in urban districts last year. Our reporter examined the details.

This farm education class aims to help children who live in urban environments familiarize themselves with farm insectsanimals. Most children have never seen animals such as snakeshedgehogs in person. However, in this class, they get to seeeven touch some of them.

This mobile farm experience classprovided on an application basis,is supervised directlyfarmers. This year’s classes began last month. Another objective of this farm insectanimal experience class to help insectanimal farmers increase their income opportunities.

Last year, 8,000 primary school children received this mobile farm experience education. The program operator targets 6,000 children including those in Seoul this year.

Article 7. Gyeonggi Allies with Private Sector for ODA (0527)

Gyeonggi Province formed a council for Official Development Assistance, or ODA, involving specialistsvarious fields in the private sector so as to maximize the results of its international aid projects. Our reporter examined the details.
