Article 1. Official Housing Value Rises in Gyeonggi Province (0506-3)

The official evaluation value of housing in Gyeonggi Province has increased 2.58 percent since last year. Siheung (시흥) City saw the greatest increase among the thirty-one localities of the province. Our reporter examined the details.

Gyeonggi Province announced official evaluation value as of January 1 for 440,000 residences.

▶ Gyeonggi Housing Value Increases2.58%
The official evaluation value of individual housing rose 2.58 percent on average over the past one year. It is, however, lower than the increases seen in Seoulthe national average.

[CG] Siheung (시흥) City marked the greatest average housing value increase in the province at 5.25 percent; it was followedthe cities of Guri (그리)Icheon (이천)

Housing value increased inthirty-one citiescounties of Gyeonggi Province.

[CG] Among 440,000 residences evaluated, 310,000 were valued higher than last year,the remainder were either new or valued on par with last year.

Article 2. Gyeonggi Cyber Marketplace Reorganized (0504)

Before the beginning of the Family Month of May, the Gyeonggi Cyber Marketplace reorganized its website. During this month, the online shop will feature a variety of gift itemsspecial sales events including customized gift sets.

▶ May, the Month of Present-giving
Including Children’s Day, Parents’ DayTeacher’s Day, as well as Spouses’ Day, there are more gift-giving days in May than in any other month. This can be a burden for many consumers.

[CG] A survey of office workers revealed that an average Korean worker spends half a million Korean won on such days during May. The majority of them said itburdensome.

▶ Gyeonggi Cyber Marketplace Offers Ideal Gifts
With improved designsorganization, the Gyeonggi Cyber Marketplace features gift items for such days at reasonable prices. In addition to customized gift sets, the website also offers products in four thematic categories.

Article 3. Electric Vehicle Exhibition Held in Gyeonggi Province (0506)

An international electric vehicle exhibitionacademic convention, titled EV28, opened at KINTEX in Goyang (고양) City.

This exhibition features a range of electric vehicles including two-person sports cars, 1-ton trucks, small busesindustrial vehicles. All these vehicles are virtually noiselessenvironment-friendly, producing no exhaust gas.

During the event, localinternational electric vehicle manufacturers revealed new visionsshowcased new technologies; 144 enterprises45 countries participated in the event, occupying 400 booths.

▶ e-Motional Technology for Men
With an official theme of ‘e-Motional Technology for Men’, the exhibition showcases human-friendly vehicles with emotional appeal. Visitors are impressedthe interiors of the hybrid cars. The smallest electric vehicleonly one-third the size of ordinary carscan run at up to 100 kilometer per hour. It takes only threehalf hours to fully charge the vehicle’s battery.

Therealso a special test riding event for visitors in which members of the public can experience riding electric vehicles before they are introduced in the market.

Article 4. Honey Wine Developed in Gyeonggi Province (0506)

Demand for honey has increased in Korea with its diversified usage in products such as honey butter cookieshoneyed nuts. Recently, a brewer in Gyeonggi Province introduced honey wine to add to the honey product ranks.

Honey wine is, in fact, one of the oldest known alcoholic drinks. Traditionally common in Europe, it used to be served to newly married couples.

“I am a wine fan. Honey wine has a smooth taste. I came to buy some more honey wine.”

Honey winebrewed through the fermentation of honey with wateryeast. This simple but delicate technology has been transferredthe Gyeonggi Agricultural ResearchExtension Services.

The brewery uses natural honey produced in its own beehives.

The honey wine of Gyeonggi Province has already been recognized overseas; it won a silver medal last yearsecured a gold medal this year at Monde Selection, one of three renowned international wine shows.

Article 5. Gyeonggi Pursues Special Economic Zone Designation (0507)

Gyeonggi Provincepursuing the enactment of a law for the designation of special economic zones in northern provincial regions. The provincial government plans to operate these economic zones as part of a North-South economic belt.

[Report]
Entitled National Reunification Special Economic Zones, these zones are to be located in Paju (파주) CityYeoncheon (연천) County. Gyeonggi Province’s previous submissions of special economic zone designation law drafts were unsuccessful due to National Assembly session time limits. Gyeonggi Province Governor Nam Kyung-pil expressed his strong intent to realize enactment this time.

“I strongly believe that northern Gyeonggi Province must be the advance base for national reunification.”

In these zones, Gyeonggi Province hopes to a pre-unification industrial model combining the resources of the Norththe South.
The enactment of the special economic zone designation law will provide a statutory basis for the establishment of economic unity through economic exchanges between South KoreaNorth Korea.

[CG] The first step following the enactment will be the designation of North-South free trade zones. The next step will be the creation of an economic cooperation belt encompassing Paju (파주), Yeoncheon (연천)Goyang (고양) as well as the existing cooperative economic complex in Gaeseong (개성) of North Korea.

These special economic zones have the primary objectives of accelerating the process ofpreparing for national reunification.

Article 6. Entertainment for Former Japanese Military Sex Slaves (0504)

A special entertainment event was held for former Japanese military sex slaves. Gyeonggi Province Governor Nam Kyung-pil, who was also present at the event, demanded an official apologyJapan.

The guests of honor of this event are ten surviving victims of such atrocities. These ladies, who are now in their 90s, are presented with carnations, a symbol of love offered to parents,entertaining performances.

At the event, Governor Nam promised that he will do his utmost to prevent such a tragedyever occurring again,that he would realize the establishment of a memorial hall for the victims.

There are currently fifty-three surviving victims of such atrocities; their average ageninety-three. Korea has repeatedly demanded an official apologyJapan, but Japanese authorities have so far denied the existence of such exploitation.

Article 7. Gyeonggi Universal Design Survey Team Begins Investigations (0507)

According to a survey, one third of the urban population finds their living environment inconvenient. Gyeonggi Province has organized a survey team so as to identify the inconvenient elements experiencedvulnerable individuals including those with disabilities, seniorspregnant women. The team members took to the streets to experience such difficulties themselves.

The team members are educating themselves to better understand the difficulties facedphysically challenged individuals in their daily lives. Their experiences will help them identify elements that need to be improved.

Universal Design Survey Team Education
The Universal Design Survey Team, consisting of more than thirty officials, received intensive education before starting their investigations.

The universal design policy of Gyeonggi Province was established in 2011 so as to safe living environments for everyone. In addition to education, the team members also visit welfare facilities, roadsother facilities used dailycitizens so as to identify elements that can be improved.
The team members then discuss problemsfeasible alternatives. The ensuing environmental improvements will be effective ones based on an understanding of the actual difficulties facedphysically challenged individuals
