In just nine years since its opening, Pangyo (판교) TechnoValley in Seongnam (성남) City of Gyeonggi Province is fast becoming the center for advanced technology industries in Korea. Many IT enterprises from Teheran (테헤란) Valley in Seoul are now moving to Pangyo (판교).

1) Large and Semi-Large Enterprises Favor Pangyo Techno Valley
Currently, two thirds of the resident enterprises in Pangyo (판교) Techno Valley are either large or medium-sized enterprises.
Many of them, including most of the major gaming enterprises in Korea, have moved here from Teheran (테헤란) Valley of Seoul in favor of the more economical operating expenses including rental costs.

“Large enterprises account for 20 percent and medium-sized enterprises 35 percent. They also benefit from inter-company cooperation in their research efforts, which is characteristic here.”
Since its establishment, more than seven hundred enterprises have established operations in Pangyo (판교) Techno Valley,creating more than 38,000 new jobs.
3) Success Led by Local Administration
The success of Pangyo (판교) Techno Valley is generally attributed to effective planning by the local administration.
4) Customized Industrial Complex Design
The functional division of the complex into different zoneshas demonstrably contributed to the inducement of investments from large enterprises.
The availability of infrastructure for research and operations also plays a part in attracting technology-intensive enterprises.
5) Accessibility to Gangnam of Seoul
The geographic closeness of theGangnam (강남) area of Seoul, a business center within a15-minute commute,is also one of the attractions of Pangyo (판교) Techno Valley.

Together with thetechno valleys in Gwangyo (광교) and Dongtan (동탄), Pangyo (판교) Techno Valley is part of the techno valley triangle that the Gyeonggi Provincial Governmenthas fostered as a tech-industrynetwork.

Article 2. Happy Reading Sharing Brings Happiness to a Remote island (0401-1)

The Happy Reading Sharing Program of Gyeonggi public libraries recently brought happiness to the residents of a small island in the Yellow Sea by establishing a library with donated books. A GTV reporter was there.

1) Gukhwa Island, Hwaseong City
Gukwa (국화) Island off the coast of Gyeonggi Province is a home to only sixty residents.
As is the case on most small islands, they hadalmost no access to libraries or opportunities to read books for learning or just fun…until they were given a library of their own.
2) New Library with 500 Donated Books
With five hundred books consisting of novels, children’s books and volumeson many interesting subjects, this library soon became a commonlyfrequentedplace among residents, mostly seniors, as well as visitors.
3) Park Gwang-sik / Chief of Gukhwa-Ri
“Books are something that we don’t get to see often on this island. It’s wonderful that I can come here any time or borrow books to read at home.”
4) Library in Happy Learning Hall
This library was opened at the Happy Learning Hall that the Gyeonggi Provincial Governmentestablishedfor residents in 2012.
The hall features learning facilities including computers as well as music and yoga classes.
Many residents have already become regulars and use this hall as their favorite leisure place. With the new library, residents are now able to learn much more.
5) Park Kyeong-sook / Chief Official, Gyeonggi Province Library Team
“We plan to donate books to places isolated from information such as local children’s centers, facilities for unmarried mothers, juvenile reformatories and military bases.”
The Happy Book Sharing Program of Gyeonggi public libraries uses books donated by citizens, enterprises and publishing houses.
6) 130,000 Books Donated to 330 Locations viaHappy Book Sharing Program
Since 2010, more than 130,000 books have been delivered to 330 locations in Gyeonggi Province through this book-sharing program.

Article 3. New Rose Breed Show(0402-3)

On April 2nd, the Gyeonggi Agricultural Research and Extension Services, or GARES, held a rose show to introduce new rose breeds developed by the institute. GARES has been developing new flowering plantbreeds to help the provincial floricultural industry.

Its new rose breeds have also been introduced inoverseas markets with positive responses.
1) Yellow Eye – Popular in Europe
The tomato-shaped Yellow Eye breed was introduced at a previous show, andis already gaining popularity among European buyers.
Yellow Eye roses feature a strong fragrance and are ideal for both decoration and perfume production. It is also popular among Korean consumers.
2) Ice Red –Large Flower, High Yield
Ice Red, one of the new breeds introduced at this year’s show, is attracting a great deal of attention from Korean floral farmers since it produceslarger blooms and15 percent more flowers than other breeds.
3) Byeon Yoo-seop / Rose Farmer
“(Rose development) is advancing at an amazing speed. There are breeds that look even better than (the existing breed) Phillip. New breeds seem to reflect consumer preferences for large flowers. I am impressed.”
4) 75 New Rose Breeds Evaluated by Specialists
Seventy-five new rose breeds,which were introduced at the show this year,underwentmeticulousevaluation by specialists including floral farmers and distributors as well as experts.
Those that scored well will be introduced primarily to the domestic market after trial cultivations.
5) Lim Jae-wook / Director, Gyeonggi Agricultural Research and Extension Services
“We try to develop breeds that can be differentiated and that can help farmers increase their income.”
Gyeonggi roses are regarded highly in international markets.
6) Gyeonggi Roses Sold in 19 Countries and Earn USD 200,000 inRoyalties
Forty-six rose breeds developed by GARES have been introduced in nineteen countriesso far, earning USD 200,000 in royalties.
7) Import Replacement Effect:KRW 1.8 Billion
Approximately1.7 million plants have been supplied to domestic farms. These breeds have savedKorean rose farmers KRW 1.8 billion in royalty expenses by replacing imports.

Article 4. Gyeonggi’s Dominanbang Visiting Public Services Upgraded (0331-3)

The Public Service Office of Gyeonggi Province recently began a new visiting service program, Play-and-Talk, that combinesthe present visiting publicservices known asDominanbang (도민안방) with volunteer work. A GTV reporter followed thePlay-and-Talk team to Gwacheon (과천) City.

1) Welfare Center for Disabled, Gwacheon City
This is a welfare center for individuals with disabilities. Many elderly womenvisit this center almost every day to while away long,unoccupied hours with minor activitieslike assembling ballpoint pens and socializing with others.
Today is special since they have been joined byyoung helpers in blue vests.
2) Choi Gap-soon / Choongang-dong, Gwacheon City
“I want to do this as long as my health allows. I am grateful (to the volunteer helpers) and I’ll be pleased to see them often.”
These visitors in the blue vests are members of the Dominanbang (도민안방) public service team of Gyeonggi Province.
On Play-and-Talk days, the teamvisits residents andprovidesprimary consultation serviceson site whileworking together with their hosts.
3) Play-and-Talk Day of Dominanbang Team (March 31st)
Today, the Dominanbang (도민안방) team selected the Welfare Center for the Disabled in Gwacheon (과천) City for their monthly Play-and-Talkvisit. At the center, each member of the team conductsindividual consultationsin specific fieldsranging from health and welfare to real estate.
Not all the reported issues could be resolved on the spot. However,the seniors seem much happier simply because they were heard and know that someone sincerely understands their problems.
4) Lee Se-jeong / Director, 24/365 Public Service Office
“We devised the Play-and-Talk Program to become closer to residents, deal with their problems as service professionals, and to spend time with themin their own environment.”
On Play-and-Talk day last month, the Dominanbang (도민안방) team visitedthe Seniors’General Welfare Center in Uiwang (의왕) City, served lunch, and participated in treatment programs.
5) Dominanbang Visiting Public Service
The Dominanbang public service team will undertake Play-and-Talk visits once a month, circulating around the province.
The Gyeonggi Province Public Service Office plans to operate the Play-and-Talk Program to work with residents in a variety of settings includingfestivals, farms and industrial sites.

Article 5. Korea International Boat Show D-71!(0402-2)

With the Korea International Boat Showstill two months away, there isalready mounting interest among local and international enterprises in this annual marine leisure industry show hosted by Gyeonggi Province.

1) 2014 Korea International Boat Show (June 12th-15th, KINTEX)
The Korea International Boat Show, one of three major boat shows in Asia together with events in Yokohama and Shanghai, is scheduled to run for four days from June 12th.
2) YooYeon-shik / Head of Korea International Boat Show Organization Team
“If last year’s show was the one that established its name in the international scene, this year’s show will be the one where money moves.”
The targeted occupation of 700 booths has already been achieved one month before the application deadline.
3) Certified Exhibition by US Commerce Department
Such heightenedinterest in the Korean show may partly be the result of official recognition marked by the show’srecent attainment of Trade Fair Certification from the US Department of Commerce.
The Gyeonggi Provincial Government is now modifying plans so as to expand the show area to accommodate more enterprises in response to growing demand.
Like last year, the Gyeonggi Provincial Governmentonce again chose KINTEX in Goyang (고양) City as the venue of the show so as to betterfacilitatethebusiness end of the event.
4) Korean Government Involved as Co-Organizer
For the first time, the Korean central government will also be involved as a co-organizer, adding credibility and authority to the show.
The Gyeonggi Provincial Government is overseeing the preparation of the show,focusing on the promotion of marketing and sales during the show while maintaining the entertainment aspect of the event for the general public.


Article 6. Yeonin Mountain Forest Experiential Program Opens(0331-1)

At this time of year, the Korean Peninsula abounds with spring flowers, and there are many spring flower festivals held around the country. There are also forest-experience programs for mountain lovers. One such programrecently opened atYeonin (연인) Mountain in Gyeonggi Province.

Along a trail, halfway up Yeonin (연인) Mountain in Gapyeong (가평) County, children walk in linewhile happily singing. Trees, rocks, slopes, the crunch of fallen leaves under their feet, frog eggs that they come across in a stream…Everything fascinates themas they reach out with all their senses.
2) Shin Seong-beom(Age 8) / Sky Forest School Participant
“The most fascinating things I did were throwing a stone down the valley and listening to the trees.”
Children are led by forest guides who help them learn to appreciate the forest through various activities during their journey. Instructed by a guide, eachchild leans on a tree in a solemn meditating posture, listening to the breathing of the tree.

“Really? Could you hear tree breathe? How fascinating!”
The youngsters cannot take their eyes off of early wild flowers and forest insects.

3) Forest Experience Program in the Largest Pine Nut Forest in Korea
The entire forest is a classroom as well as a playground. The forest-experience program is not only educational for children but also has health benefits. It is also an excellent program for families.
4) Cho In-sook / Yeonin Mountain Provincial Park Management Official
“In addition to the program for pleasure, we also have a specialized program for those with environment-related medical conditions. There are five programs in which everyone can participate.”
5) Medical Examination and Consultation
Participants in the specialized program for people with medical conditions are also provided with medical examinations and consultations at a hospital.

Article 7. Gyeonggi Introduces Paper Pack Recycling Program (140401-3)

From April this year, empty paper beverage packs like milk packs,whichare normallydisposed ofas paper trash at local trash collection sites,will be exchanged forrollsof recycledtoilet paper atlocal community centers in Gyeonggi Province.

1) Apartment Complex in Uiwang City
At a trash collection site in an apartment complex, milk packs were thrown away carelessly in a collection box forused florescent tubes. At another trash collection site nearby, many milk packscan be foundin the paper collection sack along with other paper trash bound for mass disposal.

“Currently, 70 percent of paperbeverage packs end up buried or burned with other paper trash like newspapers and boxes.”
3) Paper Packs Are Expensive and Highly Recyclable
Made with expensive, high quality imported natural pulp, empty paper beverage packs are wasteddespite the cost of disposal and even though they can be a valuable resource for recycling.
4) [INTERVIEW] Kim Dong-seong / Chief Officer, Gyeonggi Province Recirculation Division Recycle Team
“The annual consumption of paper beverage packs in Gyeonggi Province amounts to 14,000 tons. Recycling these packs can reducethe cost of imports by KRW 4 billion a year.”
5) Paper Pack Recirculation Program Begins from April
From April this year, the Gyeonggi Provincial Government began the Paper Pack Recirculation Program in all cities and counties of the province to promote the recycling of paper packs.
6) 1 kg of Paper Packs Exchanged for 1 Roll of Recycled Toilet Paper
Through to this program, one kilogram of paper beverage packscan be exchanged for one roll of recycled toilet paper at local community centers.

“It saves money on imports, reduces waste disposal costs and saves us money on toilet paper. It’s seems beneficial in many ways.”
It takes thirty five one-liter milk packs to make 1 kilogram. Such a small effort among households can save money and resources as well as the environment.
