After 51 days of an exceptionally long summer monsoon season in Korea, a hot season started on the Korean Peninsula. Itforecast to be hotter and, again, longer than usual.
Since the number of heat-related casualtiesexpected to rise, the ‘119 Emergency Services’ were brought to extra alert.

2) Number of Heatstroke Victims Expected to Rise
There were 142 cases of heatstroke-related ambulance service in 2010 in Gyeonggi Province. The number decreased to 106 last year.
Since the numberexpected to rise this year, the ‘Gyeonggi Fire Services’ began operating the ‘119 Call-N-Cool Ambulance Services’.

“We came in response to a call reporting that an individual was about to faint seemingly sufferingheatstroke. One must avoid engaging in outdoor activities during the hours12 pm until 4 pm, to avoid exposure to the risk of heatstroke.”

Article 2. A Book Café on Waste Incineration Plant Observatory (0814_3)

An observatory on the 47-meter tower at a waste incineration plant, the ‘Pangyo (판교) Clean Tower’ was transformed into a book café, which opened to the public on August 12th.

“Thisa model case of a marriage of an NIMBY facility with public leisure. We plan to make the book café one of the popular spots to visitcitizens who also visit the sports center or park nearby.”

Article 3. The 16th Bucheon International Comics Festival (0816_3)

The 16th International Comics Festival opened in Bucheon (부천) on August 14th – running for four-days. This year’s event features a variety of programs including a character parade, drawing shows,autograph signingfamous comic writers.

1) Special Fair Hall, Image Culture Complex, Bucheon City
A large number of comic fans are standing in line waiting for their turn to get an autograph of their favorite web-toon writer. In another corner, cartoonists are drawing caricatures for visitors. In yet another corner, visitors try their skills at cartoon character drawing.
2) Park Hyuk-joo / Incheon
“We could see the whole process of comic book making, which my daughter seemed to take much interest. She took photographs in a production setting,said she wants to become a cartoonist.”
The quality of the festival was upgraded this year. There are interesting new programs in which visitors can enjoy more through participation.
Viewers revisited the famous comic-story-books, many of which have been produced as cartoon films with great success. Children took photographs with imposters who were dressed as popular cartoon characters.
3) Bae Hye-jeong / Bucheon International Comics Festival Production Curator
“The key to the success of this festivalthat visitors can meet with many comic writersparticipate in a variety of programs here. We will continue to develop diverse programs for the enjoyment of visitors.”
4) The 16th Bucheon International Comics Festival (August 14th – 18th)
This ‘International Comics Festival’popular among both childrenadults. Every year, more than 100,000 viewers visit this annual event.
Article 4. Suwon Launches ‘Dancing Talk’ Service Project (0812-1)

The Suwon City Administration announced that it would launch a ‘Dancing Talk’ Service Project. Ita remedial program using dancing as a communication media for adults who suffer stresssocial interaction problems.

Itlate in the evening when these adults gathered in a dance practice room. They startwalking barefootslowly pick up speed making random movements.

While dancing, they sometimes lead others or sometimes follow others’ lead.

This dancing program aims to help those with emotional issues to relieve their stressespromote relaxation as well as self-development.

“I thought dancing was only for those who are talented. I know differently now. It’s a way of expression of yourself in whatever manner you can use.”

Participants of this program say that they became more open mindedcould benefitthe therapeutic effects of dancing.
Article 5. Tour of Yeonpyeong Naval Battle SiteYouths (0813-1)

The ‘Gyeonggi Provincial Administration’ organized another ‘Communication with Youth’ eventinvited students to a tour of naval battle sites, to promote the awareness of the importance of national defense among youths.

1) Battleship Chamsuri during the 2nd Yeonpyeong Naval Battle
Students visited the battleship which were involved in the naval battle that took place between SouthNorth Korean battle ships on the offshore of Yeongpyeong (연평) Island in 2002. The battle occurred when a North Korean navy vessels violated the northern limit line of the South. This shipnow out of service but still bears the scars leftthe battle.

After a visit to the battleship, a hundred strong participants of the ‘Communication with Youth’ program attended a lecture‘Gyeonggi Province Governor’ Kim Moon-soo about the importance of international alliances.

Governor Kim’s lecture was followeda special lecturelieutenant commander Lee Hee-wan (이희완) who was one of the naval officers who fought during the Yoenpyeong (연평) battle.
During the 3-day itinerary, youths also communicated with the provincial administration regarding other issues than national security such as historical, environmental,social concerns.
Article 6. Gyeonggi to Build the ‘World Peace Park’ in the DMZ (0814-2)

The Demilitarized Zone, or DMZ, between SouthNorth Koreasfour kilometers widestretches 248 kilometers between SouthNorth Korea. The Gyeonggi Provincial Government announced recently that it would the World Peace Park in the DMZ.

The DMZa unique area in the world that has been left untouched for 60 years. Human trafficresidence isallowed in this zone. The nature in it has therefore, been perfectly preserved.
2) ‘DMZ World Peace Park’
Seeing the potential for tourism, the provincial government decided to build a park in the DMZ.
3) PajuYeoncheon to Vie for Hosting
Two candidate areas, both within one hour travel distancethe ‘Incheon (인천) International Airport’, were initially chosen for their excellent natural beautygeographic locations.
The provincial government has already finished a feasibility studyhas drawn an implementation plan, which includes an investigation of the area. Areal investigationimportant because there are several factors to be considered including old mine fieldsecological consequences.

The park area will be extended up to the ‘Military Demarcation Line’, the actual borderline between the two Koreas in the middle of DMZ, down to the ‘Civilian Control Line’ 5 to 20 kilometers south of the DMZ.
4) Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Moon-soo
“We will work closely with ‘Gangwon Province’, the ‘Korean Government’the ‘Korean Military Forces’ to realize the creation of the Peace Park,just for us but for the world.”
The construction of the ‘Peace Park’ will be more meaningful because it will be built in the DMZ, a symbol of warconflict.
Article 7. PeacePiano Festival (0814-1)

An unusual music festival organizedthe ‘Gyeonggi Arts Center’ began on August 17th in Gyeonggi Province. Termed, the ‘PeacePiano Festival’, it will feature everything about pianos during its eight-day festivities. Its first event took place at the ‘Suwon Station Plaza’.

1) Piano Concert at Suwon Station Plaza
The station plazasuddenly filled with beautiful notes of piano music. Ita simultaneous performance playedyoung pianists using five colorful pianos. Hearing such beautiful music at an unlikely place, citizens pause in their tracksare drawn to the performances. Then they are fascinated againthe colorfully painted pianos.
2) Choi Yong-shik / Maetan-dong, Suwon
“Thisan unusual place for musical performances,to see children playjust ordinary black pianos but beautifully colored ones was quite impressive…”
These pianos are the donated ones. They have been painteda well-known artist. This open piano concert event, in fact,signaling the beginning of the ‘PeacePiano Festival.
3) Pianos to Be Donated to Welfare Institutes
After the performances at the station plaza, each of these donated pianos will be delivered to welfare houses in the province. Marking its second occasion this year, the ‘PeacePiano Festival’ will feature a variety of events including performances of Korea’s best pianists.

This year’s festivaldirectedthe pianistconductor Kim Dae-jin (김대진). There will be a variety of piano performancemany young pianists as well as performances with other instruments.
