The representatives of the ‘Gyeonggi Provincial Government’the ‘Government of Brunei’ made a tentative agreement on the joint development of biologicalpharmaceutical materials utilizing the natural resources of Brunei.

This agreement was initiatedthe Brunei Governmentdiscussed during the visitthe ‘Brunei Minister of Economic Development’ to the ‘Gyeonggi Institute of ScienceTechnology’ last month. The Gyeonggi Provincial Government has been involved in a joint development program of a similar nature with the ‘Brunei National University’ since last year.
2) Joint Research on Utilization of Natural Substances in Brunei
When the agreementfinalized, the Gyeonggi Provincial Government will provide necessary equipmenttechnology for researchdevelopment the Brunei Government provides necessary natural resourcesresearch facilities through the Brunei National University.

“The Gyeonggi Institute of ScienceTechnology has excellent equipment. I believe the joint development of natural substances using such equipment will benefit many Korean enterprises.”
Benefits will include the introduction of new substances for the pharmaceuticalcosmetic industries for new drugsproducts.
4) Ouh Jwa-seop / Director of Natural Drug Research Center, Gyeonggi Institute of ScienceTechnology
“We expected to be able to supply important new ingredients to food productscosmetics manufacturers as well as pharmaceutical enterprises using plants inthe Brunei jungle.”
The cosmetics, food,pharmaceutical industries are but a part of the areas that can benefitthe application of new natural substances.
2. Full Gyeonggi Sections of Samnamgil Open (0528-3)

The entire Gyeonggi Province sections of Samnamgil (삼남길), or the Three Southbound Roads, the longest thoroughfares that connected old Seoul with southern parts of the Korean Peninsula during the Choseon Dynasty, reopened after its reconstruction.

A ceremony for the opening of the roads was held on May 25th after the reconstruction of the last ninety kilometer sections of the Gyeonggi Province part of the roads.

A hiking event was also held to commemorate the opening of the roads that are scattered with restored historical sitesmonuments.

In addition to the Three Southbound Road, workalso underway for the restoration of a six major old roads including the Northbound Road, which will be opened in October this year.
3. Development Work in Hanam City Peaks (0529-3)

The urban topography of Hanam (하남) City of Gyeonggi Provincerapidly changing, as a number of development projects are at their peak. The senior officials of Gyeonggi Province visited the city to view their progress.

1) Misa Housing Complex
Fifteen percent of work has already been done at this Misa Housing Complex. Construction work for the extension of Subway Line 5also in full swing to accommodate the traffic demands of its residents, which will be over a hundred thousandtheof 2016 when thirty thousand households are relocated here.

The extended section of the Subway Line 5 will include five stations along its seven-kilometer route.
3) Express Bus TerminalsTransfer Center
Express bus terminalstransfer centers are also being built complete with a traffic control center. These additional traffic tems will alleviate the traffic problems in the areas southeast of Seoul. Compared with the other surrounding regions of Seoul, development of these areas has been delayed due to the restrictions placed on Green Belt areas, which still cover seventy seven percent of the city, although it has been reducedits original ninety eight percent.

The ‘On-site Senior Officials Meeting of Gyeonggi Province’ was held in Hanam (하남) City to identify the issues concerning the development of projects in the city

“There are many challenging obstacles regarding the development of housing complexesother urban development issues in Hanam City, which we should overcome through cooperation with the centrallocal administrations.”
Whenthe current development projects are complete in 2015, Hanam (하남) City will become a truly self-sufficient city with a population of three hundredsixty thousand.
4. Phytoncide Signs in Gwanggyo Mountain (0527)

Five signs that tell the hikers of Gwanggyo (광교) Mountain in Suwon which way to go to find the spot with the highest atmospheric concentration of phytoncide. Phytoncidea substance emitted mainlyconifers to fight against harmful microorganisms.

When the rescuers responded to a 119 callarrived at the site of an emergency, a child was in an extremely dangerous situation with his hand stuck between the cracks of a rusted steel structure of an amusement park facility.

The number of safety-related accidents such as this among children in amusement parks increased more than two-folds during the past two years.

The Korea match Cup of the World match racing Tour opened on the offshore of Gyeonggi province in parallel with the Marine Festival on May 29th.

Sailors took to the ocean cutting the water in their race to the medals in these Korea Match Cup finals of World match racing Tour, one of the tree international sailing events. Twelve world-class teams that passed through qualifying matches will vie for the grand prize during the five-day racing finals.

7. World No Tobacco Day (0530-1)

On the eve of ‘World No Tobacco Day’, which was on May 31st, a special event was held in the Gyeonggi Provincial Government Office Complex to help smokers quit their habit.

1) Quit-Smoking Campaign (May 30th) / Gyeonggi Government Office Complex
During this quit-smoking campaign, a small temporary public health center was erected in which smokers had their carbon monoxide levellung capacity were measured. The results of measurements, which often reflect how badly their heath was affectedsmoking, will help them garner more determination to quit smoking.

“Nobody pushed me or gave me a warning to stop smoking. I didknow my physical condition has been deteriorated so much until I took a health checkup here. Now I think I really have to stop smoking.”

There are approximately fourteen million smokers in Korea with more than half of themhad an experience of attempting to quit smoking at least once. The success rate of quittingsheer determinationonly four percent. The ‘Quit-smoking Campaign’ will provide smokers with much-needed help to restore their health
