1. Historical Samnamgil Opens in May (0411-3)

Work has got underway – based on historical evidence, to restore Samnamgil (삼남길), or Three Southbound Roads, the informal name of the old roads of Seoul. Each road spans more than four hundred kilometers between Hanyang (한양), the name of Seoul since the late fourteenth century,three southern parts of the country.

1) Gyeonggi Province Old Roads Academy
The ‘Gyeonggi Provincial Administration’ announced that the entire Gyeonggi Province section of these historical roads will be opened in May. It also announced the introduction of various educational programs, including the ‘Gyeonggi Province Old Road Academy’, to publicize the historical value of these roads.

Following the partial opening in October last year, the entire Gyeonggi Province sections of the ‘Three Southbound Roads,’ will be opened after completing the work on the remaining ninety-kilometer sections.
3) CulturalHistorical Conservation
The ‘Gyeonggi Provincial Administration’ will continue to work in cooperation with four citiesprivate enterprises for the management of the roadsthe operation of culturalhistorical conservation programs associated with these roads.

“We are endeavoring to open the remaining sections in time through cooperation with the centrallocal governments, so everyone in Korea can appreciate these historical roads.”
The restoration work for the ‘Three Southbound Roads’ was geared to revive the history of the road,included monuments, folklores,historic episodes, as well as functioning promenades.
2. Circulating Job Fair OrganizedGyeonggi Province (0412-2)

The Gyeonggi Employment Center recently organized the first circulating job fair,it was a great success. More than a thousand youths had job interviewstwo hundred were offered conditional employment in their campus. A GNews-Plus reporter was there.

2) Circulating Youth Job Fair
The first circulating job fair was held at KyungHee (경희) University in Suwon (수원). Although the unemployment rate of Gyeonggi Provincerelative low at 7.5 percent compared to the national rate of 8.4 percent, the employment problems have been one of the major challenges facing the provincial government.
3) 40 Companies Present at the University Job Fair
Forty companies, that aredifficulties finding qualified employees, were invited to the job fair. Representatives of these companies interviewed 1,180 students and, among them, 241 were ed as a preliminary candidate for employment who will be offered a job after a final interview. The next job fair will be held at Yongin (용인) University in May followedone at a vocational high school in Julyanother university in Suwon (수원) in September.

This circulating job fair program was conceived to address the ironic problem of employment mismatch faceth recruitersjob searchers.
3. Four Diversity Film Cinemas Open in Gyeonggi Province (0415-2)

There are few movie theaters specializing in diversity films in Korea,most ‘diversity movie fans’ have to travel far distances to enjoy these films. Not any more, because four cinemas specializing in diversity films are now open seven days a week throughout the year in Gyeonggi Province.

1) Diversity Film Theater
This movie theater ended its showing of the Venice International Film award-winning film after only four weeks of showing,will reopen as a ‘diversity film theater’.
2) Kim Ghi-deok / Movie Director
“I think there should be at least a hundred movie theaters, whichabout five percent of the total number of multiplex cinemas, devoted to diversity films.”
The cumulative total of movie audiences exceeded a hundred million in Korea last year. However, there are few cinemas that show diversity films. For the first time in Korea, four diversity film theaters opened in Gyeonggi Province exclusively for diversity films. These cinemas will feature diversity movies three times a day, seven days a week

“As an independent movie fan, I hope that the opening of these diversity movie theaters will lead to the opening of many more throughout the country to stimulate the development of independent movies.”
In addition to these cinemas, four more diversity film theaters will also be operated on a temporary basis for one year at cultural establishments including museumart center.
4) Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Moon-soo
“We plan to open more diversity film theaters in other regions in the province, depending on the public response to these first theaters.”
With almost half of independent movies never reaching the theater in Korea, opening these diversity movie theaters will provide a momentum for the development of independent movies.
4. Gyeonggi Rose Breeds Show (0415-1)

A rose show featuring new breeds developed in Gyeonggi Province was heldthe ‘Gyeonggi Province Agricultural ResearchExtension Services.’

There are roses ofshapescolors at this rose show. All of them are Korean breeds developedthe ‘Gyeonggi Province Agricultural ResearchExtension Services’. The two-tone roses with difference shades of pink are particularly popular among overseas flower lovers.
2) Goh Yeong-hoon / Flower Farmer
“This show allows us to see a large variety of roses at one place. I see that the domestic breeds are very competitive against imported ones.”
3) !2 New Rose Breeds
This show features twelve new rose breeds that have recently been developed. The best breeds edthe members of the judging panel will be used for supply to farmers,next year. The ‘Gyeonggi Province Agricultural ResearchExtension Service’ has been developing new rose breeds,has successfully introduced them into international flower markets. It has also helped domestic horticultural industries to save a large amount of loyalty moneyimported breeds.
4) Lee Yeong-soon / GARES Floricultural Breed Development Team Leader
“We hope to be able to supply 200,000 seedlings to domestic farmers to help them save overseas loyalty expenses. We also targeted exports of over 600,000 seedlings this year.”
The international competitiveness of Korean rose breeds has been improving continuously whichevidentthe roses at this show.
5. Real Estate Political Forum (0416-3)

The ‘Gyeonggi Provincial Administration’ invited residents,real estate specialist, to a discussion in search of solutions for the current real estate market crisis.

The real estate market, especially the housing sector in Korea,at a standstill, due to almost non-existent demand driveneconomic depression.

At the beginning of the forum, which was organizedthe ‘Gyeonggi Provincial Government’ to discuss ways to resolve the real estate market crises, initial presenter Professor Lee Hyeon-seok (이현석) pointed out the problems.

6. ‘A Day at Namhansanseong Rural Palace’ (0417-1)

A history experiencing program for children, named ‘A Day at Namhansanseong (남한산성) Rural Palace’, was opened at the historic mountain fortress in Gyeonggi Province. Our reporter was there.

While re-enacting the battle against invaders to protect the fortress, children learn about the historical background of the fortress, as well as the history of the fortress itself.

Wearing full ancient military attire, children assume resolute expressions when they practice archery.

This program was organized as part of the ‘Cultural Experience Project’, designedthe ‘Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation’ for culturalhistorical education for primary school students.
4) Gwon Ji-hye / Namhansanseong Culture & Tourism Team, Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation
“The restoration work of the Rural Palace in Namhansanseong was completed only last year. We designed this program to help children learn about the history of the fortress in a more realistic way.”
Though the history of this fortress includes some of the darkest moments of Korean history, it offers an excellent setting for experiential history education for children.
7. Gyeonggi Seeks Mitigation of Agricultural Promotion Zone Regulations (0416-2)

The ‘On-site Senior Officials Meeting’ was held in Yeoju (여주) County to view the negative effects of regulations on the ‘Agricultural Promotion Zones’ first hand ,to discuss ways to improve the situation. After hearing the voices of residentswitnessing the problems, the senior officials agreed on taking drastic measures to alleviate the many regulationsrestrictions.

“One of our trucks rolled over last year negotiating the road. We also have been treated unfairly in credit ratings due to regulations that are irrelevant to our business.”
‘Agricultural Promotion Zones’ are the most afflicted victims of regulations that are often irrationalunpractical. The ‘Gyeonggi Provincial Government’ has been well aware of the problem.
4) On-site Senior Officials Meeting (April 16th) / Yeoju County
The senior officials of Gyeonggi Province visited Yeoju (여주) County, the dense farming region in the province, to discuss ways to overcome the situation.
5) Proposals to the Central Government
StartingYeoju (여주), the ‘Gyeonggi Provincial Government’ plans to investigate on-site problemsdevelop proposals for the mitigation of regulationsthe central government.

“We will mitigate provincial regulations more aggressively pressing the central government to transfer the authority to local governments for matters regarding the area below a certain level.
The mitigation of regulations will significantly help farmers overcome the difficulties broughtthe effectuation of Free Trade Agreements.
