Title 1. 2012 SecurityDisaster Equipment Exhibition (0821-2)

The SecurityDisaster Equipment Exhibition was held for four day running at the Gyeonggi Provincial Government Office Complex on the occasion of the annual Eulji (을지) Drill, whicha nationwide emergency exercise for civilians, the military,government. The exhibited items included advanced military hardware such as CobraApache helicopters.

Visitors were allowed to enter the cockpit of the helicopters. Children, in particular, were enthusiastic about being able to sit in the pilot seat of a real helicopter.

“Itfascinating to see real combat equipment first hand.”
A large array of military hardware currently usedthe Korean armed forces covered the central quad of the Gyeonggi Provincial Government Office Complex.

This exhibition, which ran until August 23rd, was organizedGyeonggi Province to promote public awareness of the importance of national security.

The Gyeonggi Technical Institute, the provincial school for professional technicians,providing free education programs to provincial residents.

Established in 1995, this school has produced more than 14,000 industrial technicians,boasts a high employment rate of 94%.

Title 3. G-Marked Livestock Products (0821-1)

The Donong (도농) Unity Program was organizedthe Gyeonggi Branch of the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation to publicize the processing of G-marked livestock products –breeding to processingdistribution – among members of the public concerned with school meals.

These livestock animals are bred in a clean environmentprotectedstrict preventative measures against epidemics throughout their lives. Once they leave their sheds, they are delivered directly to processing centers via non-stop transportation without external exposure. A tematicstrictly hygienic processthen employed to ensure consumer safety.

This 3-day program was designed to provide parents of primary schoolmiddle school students as well as school nutritionistseducation officials with an opportunity to have a first-hand view ofthe processing procedures of G-marked livestock productsproduction to consumption.

Title 4. 2012 Eulji Drill (0821-2)

The Eulji (을지) Drillan annual securitydisaster exercise during which emergency scenarios are organizedpracticed at local levelsmembers of the public as well asmilitarygovernment units throughout the nation. A realistic drill against biologicalbiochemical terrorism was held at Wolgot (월곶) Station of Gyeonggi Province.

Thisone of the busiest subway stations in Gyeonggi Province. An explosionheardthe stationsuddenly gripped in a hostage situation stagedan unidentified man taking a citizen hostage. A special strike force immediately arrives in response to a 112 call followeda special response team of the military policea 119 rescue team. The terroristsoon apprehendedthe hostage rescued.
2) 2012 Eulji Drill Exercises (August 21st)
This was part of exercises dealing with armedchemical terrorism organizedall provinces of Korea in which 300 members of 22 private, publicmilitary organizations participated throughout the nation.

“This time, the drill was an antiterrorist exercise against a terrorist act that occurred at a public facility of high utilization. It was a joint exercise of publicmilitaryadministrative organizations.”

During the Eulji (을지) Drill, which ranAugust 21st until 23rd, other exercises including the SecurityDisaster Exhibition as well as emergency callsecurity education of public officials were also organized.

Title 5. Tourist Information Boards in Chinese (0823-3)

The number of Chinese tourists who visited Korea last year surpassed the two million mark. In order to facilitate the convenience of Chinese tourists, Gyeonggi Province began restructuring tourism facilities, including tourist information boards, in their favor.

Suwon Hwaseong (수원 화성) Fortressone popular destination among Chinese tourists. More than 4,000 Chinese tourists visit this royal fortress of the Choseon Dynasty each month.
2) 580,000 Chinese Tourists Visited Gyeonggi Province in 2011
Of the 2.2 million Chinese tourists who visited Korea last year, nearly 40% included Gyeonggi Province in their itineraries. However, Chinese visitors are being inconvenienceda lack of facilities for their needs.

“I wanted to learn more about the places I visited, but I couldn’t because there was no information available in Chinese. If there were tourist information boards in Chinese, we would be able to learn much more about the places.”

According to a survey of Chinese visitors, the three most serious inconveniences are the shortages of accommodations, Chinese foodtourist information in the Chinese language.
4) Gyeonggi Province to Install Chinese Tourist Information Boards
Gyeonggi Province now plans to install tourist information boards in Chinese at 88 tourism sites.

“The provincial government will spend KRW 170 million to install new traffic signstourist information boards offering information in Chinese.”
Chinese visitors are known to spend an average of KRW 2.6 million per person in Korea. Ittherefore important to raise their satisfaction levels,the installation of Chinese information boards will certainly improve the experience of Chinese visitors in Korea.

Title 6. New Technology to Counter the Proliferation of Green Algae (0820-2)

Paldang (팔당) Lakethe source of water for the 25 million inhabitants of Korea’s capital region. However, the water of the lake turned green this summer,tap water in the area was tainted with a foul odor.

The culprit was green algae, which grew exponentially during the heat wave when water temperatures roseall the necessary ingredients for its growth – such as sunlight, carbon dioxide, nitrogenphosphate – were available in abundance.
1) Other Algae That Lives on NitrogenPhosphate
Fortunately, the Gyeonggi HealthEnvironment Research Center announced that it has developed a new technology to counter the proliferation of green algae. This new technology uses another algae species that digests nitrogenphosphate, two of the major nutrients for green algae.

“The nitrogenphosphate that comessewagelivestock waste treatment plants accounts for 40 to 50 percent of the total concentrations in the lake. When the cultured algaedischarged (into a treatment tank), green algaedeprived of its food(eventually disappears).”
3) Countermeasures at the Sewage Treatment Stage
The proliferation of green algae can be preventedstocking sewage treatment tanks with cultured algae. Tests show that 95% of the nitrogenphosphate are removedthe tank before the treated waterdischarged.
4) Reduction of Exhaust GasPower Plants
This new technology also uses exhaust gaspower plants in the artificial culturing process of algae, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gases.

“There triple benefits. Power plant greenhouse gases are reduced as they are used at the sewage treatment plant; sewage treatment efficiency increases;sewage treatment energy consumptionreduced.”
According to the center, this technology will be made available for practical usethe year 2016.
