The Korea International Boat Show opens on May 30th for a 5-day run. This marks the fifth year of this annual event held in Gyeonggi Province, which features the Korea Match Cup – a leading international sailing competition – as well as exhibitions of marine leisuresports equipment including state-of-the-art yachts designedworld-leading designers,a variety of programs for the entertainment of ocean-loving visitors.

An ordinary house in Suwon (수원) City was remodeled for public viewing. Itthe first toilet house in the world that consists entirely of toilets of various shapessizes. This house was built as a showcase of the historical evolution of toilets in Korea.

Visitors continuously arrive at this exhibition house to see how toilets have been built throughout history. This house was originally builtformer Suwon (수원) City mayor Shim Jae-deok (심재덕),was donated to the cityhis family after his death. This house features replicas of various toilets in a time line ranginga plywood public toilet of the 1950s to a cleaner, more modern toilet of the 1960sa digital toilet of the 21st century with café-like décor.

This very unusual exhibition house has attracted 35,000 visitors since its opening, including many foreignersJapanthe US who account for 12% of the total.

“A theme park of toilets of the worldbeing planned. Construction of a large toilet culture park will be completed in December 2014 in this area, which, we expect, will attract 500 daily visitors on average.”
As noted, Suwon (수원) City plans to develop the area surrounding this house into a toilet theme park.

Officially certified social enterprises in Gyeonggi Province became the subjects of sales supportthe provincial government. Many social enterprises are experiencing difficulties in marketing their products even their products are of excellent quality.

This tofu company was certified as a social enterprise in 2008. The company’s sales have been slowly increasing since certification, but itstill struggling to expand its business.
2) High Dependency on Governmental Subsidy
Lack of stable sales channelsthe most crucial problem among the difficulties facedmost social enterprises. Many of them even fear going out of business altogether unless they are continuously supportedgovernment subsidies.

To help social enterprises with their market development, Gyeonggi Province has negotiated with large companies such as FamilyMartYuhan (유한) Kimberley for the use of social enterprise products.
5) Convenience Store Chain to SellUse Social Enterprise Products
The provincial governmentpersuading large convenience store chains to sell the quality products of social enterprises in their stores. When negotiations are finalized, quality goods of social enterprises will be able to find a large consumer market through convenience stores.

Title 4. Elderly School Meal Helpers Attend Food Education (0518-1)

There are many elderly helpers in school kitchens in Korea. As summer approaches, the Gyeonggi HealthEnvironment Research Center organized education classes for these senior citizens to cultivate their expertiseensure food safety for schoolchildren.

They taste samples of liquids with different degrees of sweetnesssaltinesstry to decide which ones taste appropriate. Such practicenecessary because elderly persons become less sensitive to tastemay become accustomed to stronger tastes.

The Gyeonggi HealthEnvironment Research Center began providing this education this year so as to improve professionalism among elderly school meal helperspromote healthy diet both for the childrenthe helpers.

This education for elderly school meal helpers achieves the dual purpose of safeguarding the health of both childrensenior citizens.
Title 5. Cultivation of Women Leaders in Preparation for Korean Reunification (0521-3)

Gyeonggi Province opened an education course for women to cultivate leaders who will spearhead preparations for the future reunification of SouthNorth Korea.

These women are students of the Women Leaders’ Preparation for Unification course organizedGyeonggi Province. These women will lead efforts in preparing for the future reunification of the two Koreas.

“Our class established a sisterhood relationship with Hangyorae MiddleHigh Schoolyoung North Korean defectors attend. This gave us an opportunity to better understand North Korea.”
This education course also includes a visit to a military border area for on-site security education.
4) The First Women Leaders Education for Reunification Preparation in Korea
This education program for women was first provided in 2001,has since produced more than 500 graduates. Many graduates are now working as reunification leaders at local communitieswomen’s organizations.

“The FamilyWomen Division has been implementing this education program on an ongoing annual basis so that women can work as leaders in preparation for future reunification.”
Gyeonggi Province plans to incorporate in-depth courses in this education program this year so as to upgrade the level of expertise.

The 2012 Gyeonggi Province Social Enterprise Festival was held at the Gyeonggi Small & Medium Business Center on May 21st. This festival sought to promote sales of the products of social enterprisesconnecting them with potential clients.

Gyeonggi Province took an active step to assist social enterprises in their efforts to connect with buyers. This was the 2012 Gyeonggi Social Enterprise Festival in which 32 social enterprises in the province participated.

The number of social enterprises has been increasing steadily along with the heightened recognition of the social role servedsuch enterprises. The number exceeded 1,500 in June last year, including those waiting for finalization of social enterprise certification.
