Groundbreaking for the Universal Studios Korea Projectexpected to take place in March of 2013, sincenecessary approvalsofficial procedures are well on their way to finalizationtheof this year. When completed, this theme park will be the largest of its kind in Asia.

Thispart of the Green City area of Hwaseong (화성) City. Italsothe global theme park Universal Studios Korea will be located. It will be the largest theme park in Asia,its completion will mean the directindirect generation of more than 100,000 new jobs.

Construction plans for infrastructure including regional transportation facilitiesroads, however, still remain to be finalized. Also, the problem of soil supply for the construction of the theme park itself as well as for road constructionone of the biggest challenges to overcome.

5) Gyeonggi Province to Provide Administrative Support
Gyeonggi Province plans to extend full administrative support for this project since Universal Studios Koreaconsidered to be a major breakthrough in the development of the provincial tourism industry as well as in the generation of new jobs.
6) Inauguration of Special Provincial Task Force for USKR Project (May 8th)
Gyeonggi Province even went as far as organizing a special task force comprised of senior officials on May 8th so as to maximize the effect of provincial support.

Title 2. Gyeonggi Officials Join Rice Planting (0508-2)

Officials of Gyeonggi Province helped farmers with their rice planting in Yeoju (여주) County, an area thatfamous in Korea for the quality of its rice.

1) Rice Field in Yeoju County
In this rice paddy in Yeoju (여주) County, people are busy planting rice seedlings. They are Gyeonggi officials who are helping farmers during the first day of the planting of the Mansaeng (만생) rice breed, the leading breed among prestigious Gyeonggi rice varieties.
2) Yeoju Rice Breed
Mansaeng (만생) ricea celebrated rice breed of Yeoju (여주) County,is renowned for its excellent tastehigh yield. The first planting of this breed took place in Wangtuh (왕터), the King’s Place,the best rice has historically been grown specifically for a succession of monarchs.
3) Harvest in Early October
This rice will be harvested in early Octobersold throughout the country. The Mansaeng (만생) breedbeing planted in 16 hectares in Yeoju (여주) County up to theof May. While working in the rice paddies, farmers are happyhope for a good harvest, forgetting the worries broughtrecent free trade agreements.

Title 3. Historic Korean School Sites Serve as Weekend Schools (0507-1)

Gyeonggi Province abounds with ancient school sites. Some of these historic sites are serving as on-site experiential classrooms for traditional culture.

1) Historic School in Hyunjeongsa Temple in Namhansanseong Fortress
In this historic school, middle school students in the classic scholarly attire of the Choseon (조선) era sit in a traditional fashionprepare for a class conducteda teacher.

Historic schools such as this are the birthplaces of the Confucian culture of the Choseon (조선) era in Korea. In these schools, students read ancient Confucian texts, often following the lead of a teacher. Today, it turned into a weekend school for middle school students as they learned classical greetingsthe wisdom of ancient scholars.

“Schools today teach us various subjects, but they are quite differentwhat we learned here. You don’t need to be a student with good grades to learn traditional ways.”
Parents of these students seem very pleased to see their children learn classical behavior, which includes fundamental courtesies.

“These children look respectable in their classical attirehats. I think italso a valuable experience for them to learn good behavior.”
5) 16 Historic Provincial Schools Open As Weekend Schools
A total of 16 historic school sites including this one are open on weekends for traditional education such as paying homage to ancestors, classical dancetraditional games. This program was initiatedGyeonggi Province when the five-day school week tem went into full effect.

“This old school has been closed to the public, but itnow open on Saturdays…”
This experiential education at historic school sites will continue until November. This off-school education at the sites of cultural monuments will provide youths with a valuable opportunity to learn traditional ways as well as to cultivate their inner selves.

The Millennium Symphony Orchestra of Korea began the provision of free music lessons to childrenfamilies in low-income bracketsto those with physical handicaps. Itthe Korean equivalent of the Brazilian El Systema, whichopen to children in underprivileged social segments.

There are more than 30 affiliated institutes of the Children’s Emotional Development Support Service in 13 regions including the cities of Seongnam (성남), Ansan (안산)Hwaseong (화성), providing music educationspecialized consultation services to 2,000 children.

This restaurant in Hwaseong (화성) City has a “Good Price Establishment” sign on its outer wall. When you enter this restaurant, you can see the price of Jjajangmyeon (짜장면) noodlesonly KRW2,500. This restaurant could lower the price for this dishusing a self-service tem, thus reducing labor costs,alsopurchasing ingredients in bulk at lower prices.

“We were designated a Good Price Establishment in March. Our sales subsequently grew20-30%. This official designation has also improved our image among customers.”
CG) Survey of Good Price Establishments After Designation
According to a survey of Good Price Establishments after their designation, 27% experienced improved customer recognition18% experienced increased sales. The frequency of visitsregular customers also increased at 54.3% of the establishments. Overall, 94% supported the continuation of Good Price Establishment designation, indicating a high rate of satisfaction.

“The purpose of the Good Price Establishment temto stabilize the consumer economy. We will expand this tem to maximize its positive effects in price stabilization.”
There are a total of 231 service establishments designated as Good Price Establishments. Gyeonggi Province plans to increase this number to more than 1,000theof May.
Title 7. 20th Old Stone Age Festival (0507-3)

The 20th Old Stone Age Festival took place in Jeongok-ri (전곡리) of Yeoncheon (연천) County for five days runningMay 4th. This festival featured a variety of experiential programs simulating the lives of people who lived on the Korean peninsula more than 300,000 years ago.

Jeongok-ri (전곡리) of Yeoncheon (연천) Countyone of the major archeological sites of the world. A variety of educationalentertaining experiential programs took place at this prehistoric site, including an ancient barbeque during which meat was cut with a stone axskewered on crudely cut sticks.

Besides the barbeque, there was also a prehistoric archery program as well as a “Primitive Family Night,” an overnight camp out in a dugout dwelling.
4) Paleolithic Life Programs
This year’s festival was characterizedmany experiential programs that sought to enhance understanding of the Paleolithic age in entertaining ways.
5) Educational Festival for the Whole Family
This annual festival, held this year under the theme of “Ancient Breath Hidden in Jeongok-ri (전곡리)”, was organized as an educational festival for the whole familyfeatured experiential programs as well as fun games. Attracting 100,000 visitors every year, it has become a major festival in Korea.
