Title 2. Gyeonggi Province Invests in Quality Ginseng Products (0305-3)

For hundreds of years, Gyeonggi Province has been one the three major ginseng producers in Korea along with the southern areas of Geumsan (금산)Poonggi (풍기). However, ginseng production in Gyeonggi Provincefacing unprecedented difficulties due to diminishing farmland, free trade agreementshard competition with other ginseng-exporting countries. Something has to be done to ensure the stable production of ginseng in Korea.

A total of 27,000 tons of ginsengestimated to be in Korean market as of 2010. Ginsengalso an important export item for the nation. Koreans earned USD 124 millionselling ginseng products overseas last year,are looking to achieve USD 200 million in exports in the near future.
2) Gyeonggi Province to Lead Improvement of Ginseng Quality
Gyeonggi Province announced that it will spend KRW 330 million up to 2014 for the improvement of ginseng quality
3) Annual Production to Increase to 5,000 Tons
In addition to quality improvement, the provincial government will also promote ginseng production so as to increase production150 tons each year until annual production reaches 5,000 tons, which Gyeonggi Province targets for 2014.

According to a Gyeonggi official, the provincial government will launch “3M Strategies” which are geared to increase productionexpand overseas markets. Detailed plans include the provision of assistance to ginseng farmers for the improvement of productivity, quality consistencythe export sales promotion of Gyeonggi ginseng products.
4) Gyeonggi Province Organizes Ginseng Industrial-Educational Cooperation Team
Gyeonggi Province also plans to organize an industrial-educational collaboration team for the development of ginseng cultivation techniques so as to help farmers increase their productivity. This collaboration team will work to spread new cultivation techniquesdevelop products containing the functional ingredients of ginseng.
Gyeonggi Province aims to increase both productivityfarmer income through technical support.

Gyeonggi Province launched an intensive crackdown on illegal food products that never seem to disappear. The assurance of food safety will be a major objective that the Gyeonggi Province Special Judicial Police plan to achieve this year.
2) Control of Disclosed ViolatorsCooperation among Related Public Agencies
The Gyeonggi Province Special Judicial Police will appoint special teams that will work exclusively to monitorcontrol already-identified violators. The judicial police will also work closely with other public offices related to agriculture, livestockfisheries to maximize investigative efficiency. Among other illegal food items, six categories in particular – such as those sold to childrenthose sold mostly during traditional holidays – were ed as objects for complete eradicationthe judicial police.

4) 563 Illegal Foods Disclosed in 2010
In 2010, the Gyeonggi Province Special Judicial Police uncovered 563 food-related law violations including 124 cases of false country-of-origin indication268 hygiene violations. All violators were dealt with according to law.

The Drug Approval-Patenting Linkage System links drug approvaldrug patenting to protect patent rights,it allows firms to list patents deemed relevant to an already-marketed product in order to extend market exclusivity. This linkage regulation will effectively prevent firms producing generic productscontinuing their business with those drugs for an extended period of time. The Korea Health Industry Development Institute estimates that the enforcement of the linkage regulations introducedthe FTA with the US will result in total losses of KRW 86 billion among Korean pharmaceutical firms over the next five years.

This bakery opened in July last year. Its birth began when a local welfare institute offered a free bakery course to immigrant wives. The women with diplomas were then provided with support for the establishment of a “Community Company”. They are now proud owners of a bakery shop with monthly average sales of KRW 30 million. They are currently considering expansion into a franchise business with branches that employ multicultural family members.

“When we first started the educational course (for multicultural mothers), we often fantasized about staying togetheropening a business justthis. But it was really a fantasy. This bakery proves that residents can open a profitable business together as long as they have special skills.
