Title 1. Multicultural Families Festival (0908-2)

During the Chuseok (추석) holidays, a festival was held on the grounds of the Gyeonggi Northern Government Complex. It was a special festival organizedGyeonggi Province to give multicultural familiesnative residents an opportunity to understand different cultures.

Members of multicultural familiesnative residents of northern Gyeonggi Province gathered together during this festival to participate in a variety of events. Children were mesmerizeda world of foreign fairy tales told to themtheir mothers, adult foreignersKoreans mixed togetherengaged in a friendly tug-of-war match. In another corner, handicrafts of many different shapescolors are displayed, symbolizing the welcoming acceptance of foreign cultures in this country.
1. Grand Multicultural Festival of Northern Gyeonggi Province / Grounds of Gyeonggi Northern Government Complex (September 4th)
The grounds of the Gyeonggi Northern Government Complex were packed with foreign residentsnative Koreans enjoying themselves during this festival. This Grand Multicultural Festival was organized to help the members of multicultural families in ten citiescounties in the northern part of Gyeonggi Province communicate withenjoy the company of Korean residents, promoting friendly acceptance of foreign members of societynative Koreans.
2. Opportunity for Mutual Understanding of Different Cultures
More than three thousand local residents participated in a range of programs that helped them understand different cultures enjoying the Chuseok (추석) holidays.
3. Rapid Transformation of Gyeonggi Province into Multicultural Society
During the opening ceremony, Vice Governor Ye Chang-geun (예창근) stated that there are 58,000 multicultural families with 38,000 children in Gyeonggi Province alone,that the provincefast becoming a multicultural society. He promised that Gyeonggi Province would expand support for the multicultural members of societyimplementing a variety of policiesprograms such as organizing multicultural forumsexpanding the operation of Korean language classes.

Title 2. ‘Gosari School’ for Children (0914-2)

On September 6th, for the first time in Korea, Gyeonggi Province opened a school for children in a temporary juvenile home to provide them with education ensuring their protection.

1) North Gyeonggi Temporary Juvenile Home
Temporary juvenile homes are public facilities that provide temporary shelter for up to six months to children who are the victims of abuse or neglect. A total of 86 children have been acceptedcared forthis North Gyeonggi Temporary Juvenile Home up to last year.
2) Educational DisruptionLong-term AbsenceSchool
Since these children are unable attend their own schools being sheltered in the temporary juvenile home, the long-term discontinuation of their education has been a problem.
3) ‘Gosari School’ Opening Ceremony / North Gyeonggi Temporary Juvenile Home, Uijeongbu City (September 6th)
Gyeonggi Province opened the “Gosari (고사리) School’ at the North Gyeonggi Temporary Juvenile Home to provide resident children with education equivalent to normal school courses they reside there.

“Resident children can also be motivated to studyattending regular classes they stay here.”
During the opening ceremony on September 6th, Vice Governor Ye Chang-geun (예창근) encouraged the 12 resident children to grow as healthybright individuals,presented a ‘flower pot of hope’.
5) Kindergarten, PrimaryMiddle School Classes 2 Hours Daily
The Gosari (고사리) School will operate for 2 hours daily, providing kindergarten, primarymiddle school classes.
6) Expansion of Education Programs Planned
Gyeonggi Province will spend an additional KRW 30 million to provide further educational programs including classes for individual specialties to help resident children make the most of their time at the temporary juvenile homes.

Title 3. Anticancer Effect of Rice CakeTea (0908-1)

A recently published study reports that the combination of Korean traditional rice caketea has an enhanced anticancer effect.

In this rice cake house, staff are busy making songpyeon (송편), a traditional Korean rice cake eaten during the Chuseok (추석) holidays. A wide variety of traditional rice cakes including songpyeon (송편) are already on display for customers.

“We have been busy since early morning because there are many more orders for songpyeoninjolmi than usual.”
An intriguing study has revealed that consuming Korean rice cake with green tea increases the antioxidant effect of both.
2) Large Amount of Polyphenol in Korean Rice CakesTeas
According to this study, which was recently publishedthe Gyeonggi Research Institute of Public HealthEnvironment, Korean traditional rice caketea contains large amounts of polyphenol, whichknown to have anticancer, antibacterialantioxidant effects. It also reported that the combined intake of rice caketea augments their beneficial effects.

According to this report, 100g of steamed rice cake with mixed beans contains 288mg of polyphenol,100g of colored songpyeon (송편) contains 127 to 146mg. Sujeonggwa (수정과), a cinnamon-scented fruit punch made primarily of dried persimmons, contains 182 mg of polyphenol,Mogwacha (모과차), or sweet quince tea, contains 168mg of polyphenol per liter. The researchers measured the antioxidant effect of the combination of colored songpyeon (송편)sujeonggwa (수정과),found that the result was higher than the sum of the individual antioxidant effects33%. The combination of colored songpyeon (송편)mogwacha (모과차) was also found to have the antioxidant effect enhanced27%.
3) Scientific Proof of Benefits of Rice Cake-Tea Combination
This findingconsidered scientific support for the fact that rice caketea have traditionally been better enjoyedKoreans when consumed together.

“It was proved in our experiment that the combined intake of rice cakesujeonggwamore beneficial for health because the combination has an increased antioxidant effect.”
Korean rice caketea areonly deliciousnutritious, they are now also proven to be healthy foods. It fits that Koreans enjoy them during traditional holidays.

Insects arejust the objects of a child’s interest or, sometimes, a nuisance, they are also used as food, medicinal ingredientseven pets. The future prospects of the insect industry appear promising. The Gyeonggi AgriculturalExtension Services held a promotional event to familiarize the public with the insect industryinsect farms.

With curiositywonder, children are rediscovering insects that they used to find repulsive. They are surprised to learn about the usefulness of these “creepy-crawlies”.

3) Promotion of Agricultural Education FacilitiesInsect Farms
This exhibition was organized for the purpose of promoting the agricultural education farmsinsect farms of Gyeonggi Provinceto familiarize the residents of the province with agriculturefarms.

There are 103 species in 47 insect families that can be classified as ‘beneficial insects’. These insects can be used as pets, food,medicinal ingredients as well as the natural enemies of harmful creatures. Among them, 9 species are used as pets.
4) KRW11 Billion Market
The insect market in Koreaestimated to be worth KRW 11 billionis expected to grow rapidly to KRW 100 billion with the growing use of insects as the natural enemies of pests in eco-friendly farming.
