The suicide rate in Korea has more than doubled over the past ten years. Italso more than twice as high as the death ratetraffic accidents. Suicideno longer a sporadic tragedy but has now become a serious social problem. To address this problem, Gyeonggi Province has announced the launch of a project for the prevention of suicide.

1) Gyeonggi Provincial Mental Health Center / Gwonseon-gu, Suwon City
The Gyeonggi Provincial Mental Health Center provides a Suicide Prevention Consultation Service both onlineby telephone. Consultants are busy answering calls that come inday. Many of the callers are sufferers of depression due to unemployment.

“I didn’t do very well when I was at school and…As you know, many companies require applicants to have a certain grade average these days. I am discouraged so often even before starting to prepare the job applications.”

Over 3,200 people ted suicide in Gyeonggi Province in 2009. In an attempt to take preventive measures against suicide, Gyeonggi Province announced the launch of the Muhandolbom (무한돌봄) Life Loving Project. Title 4. Upgraded Operation of General Disaster Center

Gyeonggi Province plans to strengthen the operational tem of the General Disaster Center to improve response capabilities to emergency situations that may arise in natural disasters.

Gyeonggi Province announced that it will reorganize the operation of the General Disaster Center to effectively deal with emergency situations that often occur during the monsoonsummer holiday seasons.

A pop-upwarning tem will be implemented. When river water or precipitation levels reach certain limits, this tem will activate the transmission of SMS messages to related stafforganizations. A hot-line will be installed between the centerlocal disaster control officials for the real-time sharing of information for effective control of emergency situations. Since these tolls are considered expensive for the distance traveled, Namyangju (남양주) City plans to renegotiate the toll plan with Namju i-way, the proprietor of the construction project, during the one month toll-free period.

The Women’s Hotline 1366 opened in Uijeongbu (의정부) City of Gyeonggi Province. Named ‘North Gyeonggi 1366’, the 1366 stands for 1 year of 366 dayssignifies comprehensive service.
2) Two Hotline Centers in Gyeonggi Province (Anyang & Uijeongbu)
Thereone Women’s Hot-line 1366 Center in each of the nation’s 16 provincesmetropolises, but this Uijeongbu (의정부) Center opened in addition to the existing Anyang (안양) Center due to geographic necessity.
4) 2-Story Center on 215㎡ Site
This new 1366 center for North Gyeonggi will house an office on the first flooremergency shelter facilities on the second floor. A total of nine consultants will work 24-hours a day in three shifts to provide quick one-stop services to women in emergency situations.
5) One-stop Service to Help Women in Emergency Situation
The North Gyeonggi 1366 center will be able to quickly intervene in situationswomen fall victim to violenceprovide them with emergency shelter as well as consultation services so as to safeguard the rights of women in northern Gyeonggi Province.
