1. Employment Support for North Korean Defector Women

The number of North Korean defectors in South Korea has reached almost 20,000. With only a fraction of thembeen able to establish stable lives, most are experiencing great difficulties finding employmentadapting to South Korean society. A job fair was organizedGyeonggi Province to help North Korean defector women find employment.

Kim escapedNorth Koreaarrived in South Korea in March last year. Since her arrival, Kim has been unsuccessful finding an employer due to social prejudice against North Koreans. The news of a special job fair for womenNorth Korea was a godsendcouldn’t be missed. Afteran employment consultationtaking interviews on site, shehopeful that her frustrations are now over.
Among North Korean defectors living in South Korea, more than 70% are women. In order to provide employment support for these North Korean women, a special job fair was heldthe Gyeonggi Women’s Vision Center.
More than 60 well-established smallmedium-sized companies in the province were invited to this job fairprovided employment opportunities to North Korean women.
Gyeonggi Province itself has so far employed 13 North Korean defectors in various officesplans to employ more.
2. Combined Rail Transfer Center at Samseong Station

The second 2011 GTX Forum was held to discuss ways in which to secure high usage of GTX. According to a report of a study that was presented during the forum, accommodation of both the GTXKTX lines at Samseong (삼성) Station would increase the number of daily GTX s9,000.

2) Academic Proposal for Establishment of Rail Transfer System between GTXKTX
During the forum, Dr. Cha Dong-deuk (차동득)the Korean Society of Transportation presented a report of his study on “The establishment of a rail transfer tem between GTXKTX.”
In his presentation, Dr. Cha proposed that the KTX line be extendedSuseo (수서) StationSamsung (삼성) Station,that a large-scale transfer tem for passengers be built at Samseong (삼성) Station.
According to the existing KTX plan, KTX will run in parallel with GTX on a 46.3 km sectionDongtan (동탄) to Suseo (수서). If the KTX lineextended furtherSuseo (수서) to Samseung (삼성) Station, Dr. Cha expects that it would have the dual effect of expanding KTX service areas as well as increasing usage of the GTX line.
Since the area surrounding Samseong (삼성) Station on Subway Line 2the economic center of Seoul, an extension of KTX to Samseong (삼성) Station would have a synergy effect for both KTXGTX, according to the analysisDr. Cha.
Considering the result of a studythe Korea Transport Institute that indicated the highly positive economic feasibility of the extension of KTX up to Samseong (삼성) Station, this KTX extensionrail transfer tem may well be supportedSeoul City in time for line construction.
Linking the GTX line with KTX may prove beneficial for both railway lines in the increase of sfor green transportation innovation.
3. Safe Drainage of FluidLivestock Burial Sites

Early this month, Gyeonggi Province announced that it would take necessary countermeasures to prevent contamination of water sourcesdiverting the flow of decomposition liquid leachingthe burial sites of foot-and-mouth disease infested livestockdraining the liquid into sewers. The first drainage work began in Namyangju (남양주) City.

Thisa livestock farm in Namyangju (남양주) City in Gyeonggi Province. 2,363 pigs, which were infectedthe foot-and-mouth virus, were culledburied here in January.
For the first time in Korea after the recent onset of foot-and-mouth disease, the decomposition liquid generatedthe decaying carcasses of pigs was artificially drained, cleaneddisposed of into the sewers. Since a large amount of decomposition liquidexpected to be generated at the burial site, Gyeonggi Province decided to drain the liquid before it escapescontaminates groundwatersoil.
The draining of decomposition liquid into the sewers consists of a three sequential processes.
First, a citric acid compoundinjected into the underground liquid collection tank to kill the foot-and-mouth viruslowering the pH level of the liquid down to 5.
The liquidthen drained through a pipe into a dung car, sterilized again with chloridetransported to an animal waste treatment plant for primary treatment.
After the primary treatment, the liquidtransported to a sewage treatment plantittreated once again up to a quality equivalent to third-grade river water before being released through the ordinary sewer tem.
Among 2,017 burial sites, 286 were designated as sites for intensive leachate management. The draining process will be repeated once every two weeks at these sites.
4. Gyeonggi FTA Utilization Support Center Opens

In anticipation of the implementation of the Korea-EU FTA in Julythe upcoming congressional ratification of the Korea-US FTA, the FTA Utilization Support Center opened to help exporterssmallmedium-sized companies maximize the opportunities opened upFTAs.

The FTA Utilization Support Center opened so as to prepare for an era of FTAs. Therea business consultation corner in a 350-square foot office of the center for visitorssmallmedium-sized companies.
This center will provide comprehensive FTA-related services including education on FTAscountry-of-origin regulations, training of FTA trade practitionersbusiness consultation.
There are 24,000 strong export traders in Gyeonggi Province accounting for more than 20% of the national total.
Gyeonggi Province plans to implement a variety of strategic administrative efforts for the maximization of FTA-led opportunities. Some of the efforts in the near future will include the promotion of participation in the Alabama Auto Parts FairIT Suppliers Exhibition for trade with the United States,the dispatch of delegations of the automobile partsmachinery trade promotion team to the Automobile Parts Expo for trade with the European Union.
So far, among the 16 provincesmetropolises of Korea, only two FTA Utilization Support Centers have opened: one in Gyeonggi Provincethe other in North Jeolla (전라) Province.
Since FTAs will have profound effectonly on economic activities but indirectly on many other related areas as well, maintaining the province as the export leader of the country has become more important,the Gyeonggi FTA Utilization Support Center will play a key role in the future.
5. Invitation of the Underprivileged to a Musical Performance

A free performance event was held for peopleunderprivileged backgrounds. Most of them undoubtedly have never been to any performances in their lives. Our reporter was theretalked to inviteesorganizers.

A number of buses full of passengers stop in front of the Arts Center one after another. The alighting passengers are members of multicultural familieschild heads-of-households.

After the musical ended, the author of the original novel, Lee Cheol-hwan (이철환), talked with the audience about the messages that he hoped to convey through his work.
The Gyeonggi Arts Center plans to prioritize people in low income bracketsreserving 10 to 20 percent of the seats exclusively for them during the running of this musical until December.
Coming outthe theater, the audience visited the Love Relay corner to register other needy neighbors with whom they wish to share the pleasure of watching a musical performance.
Gyeonggi Province has organized no less than 700 culturalart performance events in culturally deprived areas such as remote islands. The sharing of cultural opportunitiesthis event will enrich the lives of provincial residents
6. Management of Livestock Burial Site for Prevention of Secondary Contamination

Frequent media reports on incidents of contaminant dischargeburial sites of foot-and-mouth disease-stricken livestock have led to fears among Gyeonggi residents. Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Moon-soo visited the burial sites himself to see the situation firsthand.

As secondary contaminationthe burial sites of livestock culled during the propagation of foot-and-mouth disease has become a mounting public concern, Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Moon-soo (김문수) began a tour of burial siteslast weekend.
Governor Kim toured the burial sites in Namyangju (남양주), Yangpyeong (양평), Yeoju (여주)Icheon (이천) to inspect the status of managementinstalled facilities at the sites,suggested preventive removal of contaminants before they emerge.
The purpose of Kim’s visits to the burial sites was to determine there were any additional countermeasures to be taken to address problems that might arisethe actions taken to prevent the propagation of foot-and-mouth disease.
While the central governmentpublic show a positive reaction for the extraction of decomposition liquidlivestock burial sites, Gyeonggi Province began extraction work for 137 sites in the special management areas of Paldang (팔당).
In order to minimize the risk of environmental contamination, Gyeonggi Province plans to start extraction work at sites in areas that were freefoot-and-mouth disease.
7. E-Sports Festival in Yongin
