1.GTXLinked Transportation Networks

To ensure the effective operation of the metropolitan ‘Great Train Express’ (GTX) tem, Gyeonggi Province announced that it will carry out an intensive study of regional transportation networks including existing subway stations for efficient linkage with GTX stations.

When the construction of Gwangmyeong Station was conceived, the number of daily s was projected to be in order of 24,000.

However, the actual number of daily s turned out to be little more than 6,500 on weekdaysapproximately 10,000 on weekends, which was far less than the original projections.

The consensus regarding this problemthat the station was built without the provision of efficient linkage with existing transportation networks.

In order to avoid repeating this mistake, Gyeonggi Province has organized a study on the establishment of connections with transportation networks pursuing the metropolitan GTX project.

Gyeonggi Province will carry out the study jointly with Ajou Universitythe Korean Society of Transportation. The study, which will be completedApril next year, will focus on the means to connect transportationprojections for demand.

Since the GTX project was first announced in April last year, several forumsdiscussions on GTX have been held in which many transportation experts pointed out that the establishment of effective transportation network connectionsthe key to the success of the GTX tem.

Gyeonggi Province confirmed that the study on transportation connection networks will be completed in advance of the operation of GTX in order to maximize its efficiency,stated that the results of the study will also be used in other statutory planning.

2. Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art Special Exhibition “The Power of Gyeonggi Province”

The Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art in Ansan launched a special exhibition for 2010, “The Power of Gyeonggi Province,” on May 1st.

This special exhibitionpart of the Gyeonggi Art Projects of the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art,has been held annually since 2007 on various socialcultural themes of Gyeonggi Province.
This year’s exhibition consists of the display of the works of both veteranrising artists as well as the reconstruction of major art project events that were previously held at six other exhibition sites in the Province.
This special exhibition, the largest to date, provides visitors with the opportunity to appreciate both historicalcontemporary trends in the modern art of Gyeonggi Province.

‘The Power of Gyeonggi Province’ will run until August 22nd.

3.Gyeonggi Province Sports Festival Became a Provincial Celebration

The Gyeonggi Province Sports Festival, which revealed its potential to become a celebration of provincial residents in 2009, was held in Bucheon (부천) this year.

The disaster prevention capabilities of Gyeonggi Province were officially recognized as the province passed the Diagnosis of Regional Safety Levelsthe National Emergency Management Agency with high marks.

The National Emergency Management Agency announced the results of its Diagnosis of Regional Safety Levels for 2009. All the citiescounties of Gyeonggi Province were graded between 13,no city or county was rated below 3.

The objectives of the Diagnosis of Regional Safety Levels undertakenthe National Emergency Management Agency are to improve independent regional disaster prevention capabilitiesestablish feedback tems for disaster prevention policies.

Gyeonggi Province plans to further improve regional safety levels through continuous improvements of safety indicespolicies.

Young figure skating hopefuls (‘dream trees’ in Korean) who are eager to follow in the steps of Korea’s renowned world champion Kim Yeon-a met her in person at the Gwacheon Ice Rink. Gyeonggi Province promised to give them full support.

Kim Yeon-a, a national hero with legendary achievements in world figure skating competitions, visited the Gwacheon Ice Rink, the very placeshe herself trainedthe age 7 until the age 15. Impressedthe excellent performance of the young skaters there, she applauded enthusiastically.

She then gave a lesson to the youngsters, correcting their movements in detail. The figure skating hopefuls intensely scrutinized Kim’s demonstration of movementsfollowed her eagerly.

Kim gave each youngster an ankle ribbon bearing words of encouragement to become world-leading figure skaters. She tied the ribbon on the ankle of each aspirant herself.
