1. [Water Inspection]
The water law which has been enacted on December 29th 2005 will go into effect for starting from this year. But even in its first year the necessary water quality inspection is not being carried out the way it should be.
According to Gyeonggi’s enactment of the water law, owners and managers of a property must have a water quality inspection completed by the end of the year.
The water quality inspection checks for 6 kinds of elements in the water including remaining chlorines, and germs. Water containing elements that exceed the minimum would have to undergo measures ensuring clean drinkable water for residents.
According to the water law that will go into effect this year, buildings, welfare facilities apartment buildings and other structures 5,000 square meters in size or larger, must have water tanks inspected for water quality. And multi-use buildings 60,000 square meters in size and public facilities 5,000 square meters in size or larger must undergo water pipe inspections once a year.
Presently, each city and province is sending out official documents to more quickly carry out the water quality inspection and by receiving lump applications from building owners and managers according to an inspection request from the Association for the Inspection of the Quality of Drinkable Water the inspections are expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Fines of up to 10 million won would be levied, or a sentence of up to two years would be ordered against those who do not carry out the water inspection.

2. [Better Bus Stops]
Following after the public transit united fare system a second proposal to boost pubic transit by Gyeonggi is a plan to create bus stops with a new concept.
The indistinctive and rather inadequate amenities of bus stops with soon be a thing of the past, we will soon see new designs and hi-tech functions appearing at bus stops changing them into more convenient facilities for residents.
The province will invest 4.3 billion won through June of next year to install information machines that provide users with the arrival times and information about everyday life at 108 stops in 28 cities and counties.
Specially featured is the boarding help system, introduced for the handicapped and those needing assistance. Users waiting for a bus at the stop enter the bus number they plan to board. The driver would recognize the signal and provide help when boarding.
As a result, the inconveniences will be greatly reduced for passengers with needs using the bus.

3. [Privatized English Villages]
The Gyeonggi English Villages, which are under an amounting deficit, have been placed under the management of the SDA Samyook Language School. A signing ceremony to seal the deal was held at the Gyeonggi Provincial Office on the 3rd.
After having amounted a 30 billion won debt in their first year, the Gyeonggi English Villages were placed in the hands of a private company.
For the past two months, except for the highly financially independent Paju English Village, it has been tough choosing a private trust company for the Ansan and Yangpyeong camps, but finally SDA Samyook Language School was selected.
Accordingly on the 3rd, the province concluded an agreement regarding a private trust with Credu, Joongang Daily and Samyook Language School.
According to the agreement, both sides will discuss the administrative measures regarding the construction of lodges at the Ansan Camp, and push for an agreement relating to student admission.

4. [Ocean Tourism]
As a part of the West Coast Ocean Tourism Belt construction project, Gyeonggi plans to construct an ocean experience tourism region in the Seon Gam Do Ansan area.
The Seon Gam Ocean Experience construction project is a large scale combined ocean leisure complex which will include Seon Gam and Jeon Gok Port, and is to be built by 2010 by making an estimated 180 billion won investment.
The Seon Gam Ocean Experience Tourism region will be developed in three regions, the ocean leisure region, the ecology experience region, and the themed tourism region.
The ocean leisure region will be developed with four ports and a marina harbor where one can enjoy yachting, boat fishing and other water sports.
The ecology experience region will be developed under the title ‘Seon Gam Ocean Land,’ which is to become a combined resort with plans underway to build a second national tree garden and fishing village.
Further, the themed travel region will include the Daebu Do Farming and fishing villages, and an equestrian track in addition to Jebu Do boat fishing.
The province is expecting the construction of the Seon Gam Experience Tourism Region to provide a production ripple effect which would total more than 1 trillion won with nearly 9,000 jobs to be created.

5. [Senior Accidents]
Last year of the victims of fatal auto accidents, 1 out of 4 were seniors. There is a pressing need to establish transportation safety facilities to protect seniors.
Last year there were 307 seniors over 61 who died in auto accidents out of a total number of 1200 accounting for 24.8% of the total deaths.
Likewise, the reason for so many deaths was discovered to be because of an increase in the population of seniors as well as their rather active lifestyle.
It was pointed out that in the future, the senior population is expected to increase even more, calling for the expansion of a transportation safety network to protect seniors.
However, the laws and regulations are not in place to protect them, and there is not much concern regarding fatal auto accidents for seniors. Presently, projects for senior safety facilities are all in their infancy.
Accordingly, the province will draw up an estimate next year and come up with some full-scale policies to reduce the number of senior-related accidents by creating a ‘silver zone’ around the Senior’s centers or Senior’s welfare facilities similar to school zones for school children.
6. [Love Nest]
There are many neighbors around us that suffer from living in old, crumbling buildings. The G Housing Remodeling Project builds new houses for such individuals. The first home to be remodeled was opened to the public.
This home stands in Gwol Dong, in Osan, Gyeonggi. It sits in a low lying area that floods when it rains, and was not connected to the local water or gas services, making life difficult. But now it has been transformed into a beautiful, new white house.
This was the first house by the G Housing Remodeling Project, which was started to provide improvements to residents’ living environments, or for those who have trouble even keeping themselves properly fed or adequately clothed, let alone able to pay for home repairs.
Let’s take a look at the newly remodeled house. The neighbors are happy for the residents who were living under difficult living circumstances.

It’s nice that it’s so neat and tidy. I’m glad someone thought of the less fortunate

Before it used to flood here being a low lying area, not it is so clean and nice.

This time the G Housing remodeling project was able to minimize the remodeling costs by making use of surplus materials from the build sites of the Gyeonggi Sigongsa and the Korea National Housing Corporation, two support organizations.

This year we started on model projects. Next year we plan to expand our efforts to help even more people.

Presently, the second G Housing Remodeled House, which is being worked on in Suwon is expected to be completed by the middle of this month.

7. [Eco-Design City]
Pocheon City, which is in the frontier districts of Gyeonggi Province will be developed into a large-scale tourism and recreation city and is expected to be reborn as a tourism city behind Seoul.
The area around the Sanjeong Lake in Pocheon is expected to be changed into a combined tourism and city of leisure.
Pocheon Gyeonggi Province, Lotte Tours Co. LTD. and the Samsung Corporation concluded a mutual memorandum of understanding to build the Eco-Design City in Ilmyeong,
Expected to be completed by 2014, building the 13 million square meter Eco-Design City in the vicinity of Sanjeong Lake, which will include a golf course, a ski resort, and tourism housing requires an investment of 3.4 trillion won.
Ildong Myeong especially, near National Highway 47 will be where a 730,000 square meter golf resort is to be built totaling 108 holes, the largest in Korea, along with a hotel and condominiums in the vicinity.
The existing Sanjeong Lake resort area and the Baekwoon Valley are expected to be born again with both areas to be rebuilt. Condominiums and a square among other amenities will also be set up adding to the themed tourism.
In addition there is a highway to be built from a donor‘s private funds, and a second ring road to be built developing the transportation infrastructure in step with the development of the Design City’s development, which should improve the transportation conditions.
