Ilsan Hanok Village “Jeongwa” hosts its annual Light Festival between March 5 and May 31, 2015. The central theme of this year’s festival is the ‘Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter of Millenary Hanok”. Artisans have revived the tradition of Korean forebears and built 21 houses that will last a millennium. Covering a 150,000-square-meter (45,000 pyeong) site at Ilsan Hanok Village “Jeongwa” in Sarihyeon-dong (Goyang City), Jeongwa’s millennial Hanoks are surrounded by a nut pine forest on Bongwasan Mountain to the rear and the propitious waters of Gongneung River to the fore. In short, it offers geographical features that are referred to as Mojapogyeonboho, meaning the form of a mother embracing her child. It is an excellent location that effuses an aura of benevolence.

In terms of lumber – the most important material for millennial Hanoks – the Hanoks at Jeongwa were primarily built with Hwangjangmok, a type of Geumgang Pine Tree (Pinus densiflora forma erecta) which boasts exceptional quality due to its high pine resin content and endures the extreme temperature changes in the hilly regions of Uljin and Samcheok. Pine trees from these regions are believed to live for a thousand years, and to last another thousand years once they are processed; they are used to build houses. Also, much like the Korean ancestors who did not use cement, artisans laid the floors and erected the walls using natural Hwangto (red clay) procured directly for the millennial Hanoks at Jeongwa. Hansik-type tanned roof tiles were used to bring out the beautiful curves of the Hanoks. Hansik-type roof tiles never deteriorate from long use or rupture from the freezing temperatures of winter, allowing roofs to be preserved semi-permanently.

The subject of this year’s Ilsan Hanok Village Jeongwa Light Festival is ‘Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter of a Millennial Hanok’, and the main theme is experiencing traditional folk activities. The festival offers activities and spectacles including Tuho (throwing sticks into a barrel), Yunnori (traditional board game), Jegichagi (hacky-sack), making and flying kites, making spinning tops, roasting sweet potatoes and potatoes in an oven made of Hwangto bricks, Jangseung (Korean totem pole) colony, and Sotdae (traditional sign of passing the civil service exam) colony, all of which are falling farther away from contemporary Korean society. The festival offers an opportunity for families and couples to spend precious and rewarding time together.

In addition, visitors can write their wishes and hang them on Jangseungs and Sotdaes made by 13 different Jangseung sculptors. At the lumber mill, visitors may also be able to feel the passion for Hanoks at Jeongwa and the breath of maturing Hwangjangmok, a key material in building a millennial Hanok. Hwangjangmok is stored away to dry at the lumber mill after initial processing is complete.

The 2015 Ilsan Hanok Village Jeongwa Light Festival -“Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter of a Millennial Hanok” – creates an elegant and attractive atmosphere using 10 million light fixtures to light the 21 millennial Hanoks that were built over 16 years. The festival represents the aesthetic value that Hanoks possess, and expresses Korean sentiment well in connection with the four seasons of Korea.

Sculptures matching each season such as the rape flower garden, Mureung Valley, snowflakes, and more have been installed in each section. Visitors are also able to listen to Korean sounds such as the sound of rain, wind chimes, Gukak (Korean classical music), and Gueum (Korean classical oral sounds).
