7. Event information: Poised to become an international city of tourism, Icheon hosts its Sansuyu Flower Festival each April to announce the spring season. Despite being vulnerable to pollution, Sansuyu flowers resist cold weather and breed easily. This helps Sansuyu flowers bloom before azaleas, forsythias, and cherry blossoms. As a herald of spring, Sansuyu trees appear airy and bear beautiful berries; therefore, they are valuable landscaping trees. Sansuyu trees are popular in summer for the broad shade they create, and they also bear remarkable bright gold flowers that bloom in early spring. Baeksa-myeon, the host district of the event, has a colony of Sansuyu trees that are more than 100 years old. Songmal-ri, Gyeongsa-ri, Dorip-ri and other regions in Baeksa-myeon by the foot of Wonjeoksan Mountain are leading Sansuyu producing regions in the country; the trees surrounding the villages bear yellow flowers in early spring and red berries in the autumn. The road to Yeongwonsa Temple winds up the tallest mountain in Icheon, Wonjeoksan Mountain (634m), starting in Songmal-ri and passing through Dorip-ri before reaching Gyeongsa-ri. Along the road are large colonies of Sansuyu trees. If you walk along the winding road towards the foothills of Wonjeoksan Mountain, you’ll soon encounter the bright yellow Sansuyu flower colonies that adorn the landscape.
