Gyeonggi Province Holds 9th Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale 2017

The 9th Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale (http://www.gicb.kr/index.asp) will be held this April 22 to May 28 in three cities of Gyeonggi Province – Gwangju, Icheon, and Yeoju – to exhibit international ceramic artworks from more than 70 countries.

The Yeoju World Livingware Gallery will exhibit 230 burial urns created by modern artists under the theme of ‘Pray—Cherishing Life’ to suggest the future of ceramic culture. The burial urns, which are containers for the burial of human bone fragments left after cremation, will shed new light on the meaning of death and life.

The Gyeonggi Ceramic Museum in Gwangju will exhibit 80 relics and 30 modern ceramics reinterpreting stories related to the relics under the theme of ‘Memory—Reflecting on Life.’

The Icheon World Ceramic Center will exhibit 80 modern ceramics from home and abroad in two sections under the theme of ‘Story—About Life.’

The first section is designed to introduce ceramic artists from the 1960s and 70s – including Robert Arneson and Viola Frey – and to examine their progressive minds and attitudes. The second section will display the artworks of 20 contemporary artists from home and abroad to represent a variety of perspectives on individuals and society.

A total of 2,470 ceramic artworks from 76 countries, which have recorded the largest number of artworks, will be displayed at the exhibition, including 10 prize-winners at international competitions and 91 international modern ceramics that passed preliminary rounds and were submitted as entries to the 2017 International Competition that will be held at the Icheon World Ceramic Center.

Moreover, a cultural event will be organized to showcase the essence of ceramics from Britain in commemoration of the ‘2017-2018 Korea-UK Year’ for international cultural exchange.

Furthermore, the Cultural Exchange with Italy and the 2017 International Ceramics Competition for the Disabled will be held at the Yeoju World Livingware Gallery.

Visitors can take the Gyeonggang Line of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway, which connects with the Sinbundang Line, to get to the exhibition halls in Gwangju, Icheon, or Yeoju. A free shuttle service will operate from Gonjiam, Icheon, and Yeoju Stations during the period of the biennale.
