Opened in 1912 under the name Gahak Mine, Gwangmyeong Cave used to be the only mine in the Korean capital region for gold, silver, and copper. In 2011, Gwangmyeong City bought the mine, which had been abandoned in 1972, reinforced it and opened an art center inside the mine. This was part of the city’s efforts to restructure the environment of Gahaksan Mountain and develop the site as a new cultural and artistic tourism resource.

Did you know the fact that 1.9 million people visited the Cave between July 2011 when it opened and December 2015?

If you enter the cave, you can see beautiful illuminations that light up the cave.

It takes roughly 1 hour to tour the cave! Once you finish your tour, you can join activities outside Gwangmyeong Cave or explore Gwangmyeong City.
