Traditional Temple No. 202 (2001.11. 2)
147 Jangam-dong

Seokrim Temple is located in Mt. sooraksan, Jangam-dong. One who wants to visit the temple should walk about a kilometer up the path from Jangam Station. The temple was founded in 1676,Shinhaenyun (the 12th year of the King Hyunjong regime) by Sokhyun Hwasang and his disciple, Chiheum.

It was then named Seokrimam in Sokchun-dong (currently Jangam-dong) by Seogye Park Se-dang, a former Tongjinhyungam(local governor of Tongjin). The name is recorded in his collection of works titled ‘Seogyejip’ which has been handed down for generations. A big handwriting of ‘Sokchun-dong’ whose story was on the Seogyejip written by Seogye Park Se-dang, has been on a huge rock in the Seokrimsa Temple for 325 years. Later in June 1676, the year of Byungjin, Hwajuyoodamhwasang founded Samsogak which was destroyed in a flood in February 1698, the year of Mooin(the 24th year of the King Sukjong regime), and the government restored the Seokrimam as a praying house building up Cheongjeolsa to honor Maewoldang(a loyal retainer earlier Chosun). Seokrimam was demolished once again while a flood swept the temple in July 1745, the year of Ulchook(the 21st year of the King Yeongjo regime) and rebuilt by an unknown monk who named the temple Seokrimsa. It was dilapidated during the Korean War, but Sanginbiguni(a Buddhist priestess named Sangin) repaired it in 1960. It is the temple fixed by Sanginbiguni at that time that you see today.
