The name “Byeongmokan” means that although the entrance into the village is narrow, once you go inside the valley it is deep and wide. It was also called “dwi ddimi” (‘dwi’ meaning behind and ‘ddimi’ meaning the Aphididae class of insects) or “hudumidong”, both because it is located behind Suri Mountain. The area of the park was used by the Railroad Department from 1930 until 1980 as an excavation site for gravel to be used in the Gyeongbu and Suin lines, which has left behind a monstrous abandoned 100,000㎡ excavation site. To restore the site into an environmentally friendly facility, 26 billion won was invested between June 7, 2004 and May 24, 2006 to create this citizen’s park.

Artificial waterfall

A large slope was used to make a 65m tall and 95m wide waterfall, the biggest in the country. It is beautiful to look at, as there are a cave and stepping stones that you can move around in and on. At night, there is rainbow-colored lighting that lights up and during the winter it is turned into an ice wall so that it can be enjoyed throughout all 4 seasons.

Bathrooms

The bathrooms were designed to make people aware that bathrooms can be beautiful places, not dirty ones. To accomplish this, the front wall has a wall fountain on it so that one feels as if they are going into a screen fountain when they go into the bathroom. The ease of use by the citizens is further enhanced by providing handicapped bathrooms and diaper changing stations, etc.

Forest restoration

The slopes were made as stable as possible and for 1 to 3 years flowers were planted on them. After 4 years, woody species come in and started to grow and the area was restored in an environmentally friendly manner to become part of the adjacent forest areas.

Train track and gravel transportation car display

Part of the track that was used to carry gravel from Byeongmokan to Anyang was restored, and 2 freight cars designed to haul gravel have been put on display. Pictures of the park before and after reconstruction are on display to raise historical awareness. Finally, the railroad tracks have been turned into a mountain path and serve as a kind of memory lane.

Grass plaza

This wide 6,940㎡ grassy plaza was designed to be a place for families to enjoy themselves. Later on, outdoor stages were installed so that large-sized cultural events (performances) could be put on. The space is now used to host Citizen’s Day every year at the park in Manan-gu, of which the residents of the district are quite proud.

– In the park there is a 100 year old Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indicia), 40 year old pines and overall 25 species and 1,200 examples of tall trees and 114,000 small plants representing 16 different species. There are 46 types of leisure facilities such as large huts, awnings providing shade, picnic tables, etc. spread out over 300 different locations so that residents can relax in peace.
