Along with Suwon Hwaseong, ‘Hwaseong Haenggung’ is one of the finest structures.

As a temporary royal palace used by the King during trips, the palace boasts of its beauty and magnificence as the largest of its kind in the country with 576 chambers.

For 11 years from October 1789 when King Jeongjo moved his father’s tomb to Hyellyungwon to January 1800 (24th year of King Jeongjo), King Jeongjo made 13 trips to his father’s royal tomb and stayed at Hwaseong Haenggung during each of his trips.

He also held various events at Hwaseong Haenggung, including the 60th Birthday Party of his mother Hyegyeonggung Hongssi at Bongsu-dang of Hwaseong Haenggung in 1795.

Most of Suwon Hwaseong Haenggung was destroyed by fire during Japan’s colonial rule of Korea in the early 20th century, but a restoration project began in 1996, marking the 200th anniversary of the construction of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, and the royal villa has been open to the public since 2003.
