Auraji Pillow Lava is located where Yeongpyeong Stream and Hantan River meet. Auraji refers to a place where two streams meet together, and there are many places in Korea which are also called Auraji. Pillow Lava is a rare structure which is shaped after a round pillow formed in a place where basalt was rapidly cooled when it is met with water. Pillow Lava is what seems to be composed of layers of pillows. Pillow Lava was formed when lava erupting and flowing from Mt. Ori was rapidly cooled after meeting with waters pooled at an old channel for Hantan River. The basaltic lava, whose temperature was about 1,200 grades Celsius, was immediately cooled and hardened when meeting with waters. Pillow Lava was created as hot lava continually flowing down was sequentially hardened while penetrating into already hardened basalt rocks.
