This pond is located on the border between Jail-ri of Yeongbuk-myeon and Sajeong-ri of Gwanin-myeon and it is a wonderful sight consisting of a large rock and a deep pond around Hantan River. It is called Hwa-jeok since it is shaped after a stack of rice straw, whose transliteration is Hwa-jeok in Chinese. There is a story handed down. One day, an old farmer sitting beside the pond sighed and said, complaining to the heaven which had not given even a drop of rain but a severe drought for 3 years, “Alas! What shall do with all my grains dried out beside all these affluent waters? Aside from the unconcerned heaven, how can the dragon have been sleeping for 3 consecutive years?” At that time, the waters abruptly turned over and a dragon flied up into the sky and then rain began to fall that night and led to a year of abundance. From that time on, at this pond, the villagers would hold a shaman service to pray for rain every time when there was a drought. The water surface is about 400 pyeong wide and the banks are 13m high above the surface.
