Introduction

Sinjeop-ri is located 1 km away from Dangwu-ri rotary in Bungnae-myeon, 8 km to the northeast of Yeoju-eup. Many egrets and common herons used to settle in a 400-year-old gingko tree in the center of the 6.6㎢ wide breeding grounds in the northern part of town.Previously, the birds were breeding in Jangam-ri which is 1.5km to the north of the present breeding grounds. Egrets and common herons which were breeding in Jangam-ri moved and started to breed in the present breeding place, Sinjeop-ri. They are migratory birds who come to their breeding grounds in the spring and leave in the autumn. They breed in a sunny place near water and wide plains. First in 1950, the birds started breeding in gingko trees, but the gingko trees withered. Afterwards, the birds spread to other trees in the woods and most of those trees withered due to the birds’ excrement. Now, only a few common herons and egrets reside in Sinjeop-ri and many flocks live in groups in the Ligida pine woods 900m away from Sinjeop-ri. They come in late March every year and go to places in South-east Asia such as the Philippines in late September for wintering.
