1. [Growth of ‘Leafkist’]
‘Leafkist,’ the collaborative fruit brand of Gyeonggi Province, is showing a growth curve in sales and expanding its brand recognition.
The gross sales of ‘Leafkist,’ the fruit brand of pear and grape-growing farms from four regions in Gyeonggi Province Anseong, Pyeongtaek, Hwaseong, and Ansan, is growing rapidly.
The ‘Leafkist’ brand was first introduced to the market last February. ‘Leafkist’ had 1.7 billion won in sales last year in only their first year of business. This October, marked one year since their initial release, with total sales amounting to approximately 3.3 billion won, which is a 94% rate of growth.

There is to be an expected price increase for pears towards the end of the year with an increase in gross sales around New Year’s.

2. [Birdseye view of Pollution]
A service showing the hourly status of air pollution through a series of photographs was introduced for the first time in Korea.
Kyonggido Institute of Health & Environment initiated a service that shows the real-time levels of air pollution on its website.
This service, which shows photos taken from the roof of the institute every hour, also compares current air conditions with clear skies. As a result, it simplified the process of defining the current levels of air pollution.

It is a service that realistically shows civilians the level of air pollution. The purpose is this is to encourage people to create cleaner skies.

The institute is planning to provide public access to the service through cell phones and also at bus stations starting from next February.
At the same time, it is planning to provide data that includes countermeasures to fight air pollution, and strategies to improve the air quality of metropolitan areas. Moreover, environmental data according to the region will be provided through the Kyonggido Institute of Health & Environment.

3. [Let’s save our sea!]
The oil leak accident near the shores of Taean, South Chungcheong Province, has caused serious damage. Gyeonggi put forth great efforts to try to resolve the damage as quickly as possible.
Several days after the oil leak accident, one beach in Taean, South Chungcheong, was covered in black oil with each wave that struck it’s shores, harming the wildlife on the coast.
There is no way to deal with the problem at present because of the size of the spill.
Nevertheless, many corporations and organizations pitched in to help save the ocean. The public servants and fishermen of Gyeonggi Province have also helped in the cleanup.
They carefully scoop up oil and dig up oily sand. They busy themselves with carrying sand, and do not take time to rest.
Gyeonggi Province is dispatching disaster prevention equipment along with 9500 workers to the disaster area to help prevent disaster.

4. [New Generation” Exhibition]
Although pottery has long been a part of everyday life, there was an exhibition of pottery that had opened full of unique ideas from young designers.

Students from twenty-two pottery related colleges participated in the event and displayed 50 novelty idea products including tableware, lighting, and interior related products.
The grand prize winner “Record 2007” was reviewed as a new pattern that transformed Hangeul, the Korean alphabets, into emblems of color and broadened the future potentials of design.
In addition, there were many other eye-catching and creative works of pottery that apply to daily life and abolished the common recognition of the pottery equals bowl equation.
Works that not have been introduced in the exhibition could also be made in to products by assorting some art works with the potential to be commercialized. As a result some of the creative ideas of these students will be introduced to the world as a whole new brand for consumers.
The “New Generation” Exhibition, which would create a new boom in the pottery art industry and produce the next generation of pottery designers, will continue through June 10.

5. [Cultural Welfare Town]
Residents are focusing in on the full scale new town development projects in Gyeonggi. Gyeonggi Province has introduced a plan for cultural welfare facilities in the new town area.
Gyeonggi Province has decided to distribute provincial funds primarily for the construction of cultural welfare centers in new towns.
Meanwhile, cultural welfare centers were mostly constructed in new towns rather than in existing cities because of limited space and the difficulty in selecting a site. Therefore most times, centers were constructed on the out skirts of the cities making it inaccessible to most citizens.
For this reason, Gyeonggi province will construct one or more cultural welfare centers in every new town under construction from now on.

The point is to narrow the cultural gap between the new and existing cities that once existed with existing city residents living far from cultural welfare centers.

Main cultural welfare facilities include a public library, a women’s center, a rehabilitation center, and a nursery. 2-3 of these type of facilities would be at one center.
The province is going to secure sites for the centers from the founding stages of new town projects and reflect upon the new facilities.

6. [Hi-tech traffic signals]
Gyeonggi Province is going to ameliorate traffic jams by installing high-technology signaling systems in every city and district within the province and providing real-time traffic information.
Gyeonggi Province plans to expand the installation of high-technology signaling systems on police stations and 31 main cross roads in order to ease traffic malaise.
The high-technology signaling system automatically calculates and manages traffic for the best conditions according to real-time traffic density.
This system is currently operated in seven cities in Gyeonggi province including Suwon and Gwacheon. By 2009, the provincial government will invest 68.1 billion won to install this system in 24 other places.
The province is going to install traffic information centers in 24 cities and districts and offer information gathered from CCTVs and ground detectors to the citizens via electric signs and the internet.

7. [Solving Traffic Congestions]
The Gyeonggi urban innovation corporation announced that they would complete construction of an underground road by 2010 at the ChangRyongMun intersection in Suwon, a chronic traffic congestion site.

Traffic improvement plans were not made up until now because this region is close to Hwaseong, which is designated as a National Treasure in UNESCO\’s Memory of the world.
Recently, the Gyeonggi urban innovation corporation has passed a test for the approval of altering the present condition of the Cultural Heritage Administration with an eco-friendly construction plan that could minimize noise and vibration during construction.

Further, the urban innovation corporation would start constructing four way underground roads by December, 2010. This would end up extending national highway number one by 495meters. The construction would add up to 26.1 billion won.
Excluding construction plans for an underground road, the urban innovation corporation also has plans to construct the Sanghyeon Interchange intersection, the Hadong Intersection, and the East Suwon Interchange.
