From June, Camp Greaves, the only returned US military installation within the Civilian Control Line near the DMZ, will become a paradisiacal stage for the performing arts.
Gyeonggi Province (DMZ Policy Division Director) and Gyeonggi Tourism Organization (Lee Seon-myeong, CEO) announced on May 31 that they will carry out the DMZ Peace Platform Street Performance Project at Camp Greaves in Paju for five months from June to October this year.
This project is part of the DMZ Peace Platform Project to make Camp Greaves a cultural and artistic space that increases public awareness of the significance and values of the DMZ. Performances will take place every weekend (Saturdays and Sundays) from June 2 to October 28 this year.
During the project period, cultural and artistic programs of various genres including traditional Korean music fusion, magic, street dance, theater, busking, performing arts, and visual arts will take place in different parts of Camp Greaves such as bowling alleys, US military barracks, and outdoor green spaces.
The first performance starts on June 2 (Saturday) at 11:20am. On this day, a concert of Ain, a traditional Korean music fusion group, and the theater production “Transformation” by the theatrical troupe People In Backpacks will welcome audiences.
Ain presents a modern reinterpretation of traditional Korean music genres such as pansori using the daegeum (Korean flute), gayageum (Korean zither), and electronic violin. People In Backpacks stages Transformation, a drama based on Franz Kafka’s novel of the same name and adapted from a more popular viewpoint.
For the convenience of visitors, a free shuttle bus service connecting Imjingak Pyeonghwanuri Park and Camp Greaves will operate every weekend (Saturdays and Sundays) during the project period (June 2 to October 28).
The shuttle bus operates three times a day (10am, 1pm, and 4pm) and visitors can request use of the bus at the rear of the outdoor stage in Pyeonghwanuri Park up until 30 minutes before departure.
Of particular note, for those who visit Camp Greaves using the shuttle bus service, designated guides will accompany travelers on a facility tour so visitors can learn about the history and culture of Camp Greaves.
Camp Greaves is the only installation returned by the US military within the Civilian Control Line; US military personnel were stationed here from 1953 to 2004. Located approximately 2km from the DMZ, it is a place where visitors can see traces of the US military and experience the reality of the divided Korean Peninsula firsthand.
