DESCRIPTION

Suwon Hwaseong is a large fortress with 6m high and 5.7km long that surrounds the downtown of Suwon. One of Korea’s best known cultural assets of 18th century, the fortress was designated as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage in 1997. The unique fortress blends Asian and Western military fortifi cations togetner for superb defense. Its four gates and 50 annexes create a masterpiece of art based on their distinctive beauty and diversity. This historic, fascinating construction is always alive with tourists. It takes about 3 hours to make a tour of the fortress.

Suwon Hwaseong Train – King Jeongjo’s palanquinshaped train.
This tourist train travels between Paldalsan (Mt.) and Yeonmudae (3.2km-long). The dragonshaped front of the train and the red passenger cars are a sight to see!

Beating the Bell of Hyowon
The huge bell (2.15m in diameter, 3.54m in height, and 12.5t in weight) at the top of Mt. Paldal is a symbol of Suwon. The hopes are said to come to pass by ringing the bell. Strike the bell three times to wish for your parents’ health, for family’s health and for your own improvement.

Suwon Hwaseong
Museum The Museum specializes in informing the culture and history of the
Hwaseong fortress. The whole city of it rather than the building is famous and the building itself is a world’s exemplary castle building of the 18th century, considered as the beauty of Joseon Dynasty.

Hwaseong Haenggung
Haenggung is a kind of temporary palace where king stayed. A filming location for the mega-hit TV drama Dae Jang Geum Hwaseong Haenggung is known as the largest and most beautiful Haenggung in Korea. King Jeongjo had stayed here while worshiping his father, Crown Prince Sahdo. He had also hosted in the fortress the 60th birthday celebration of his mother, Crown Princess Hong.

24 Korean traditional martial arts are performed. (11:00 everyday except Monday)

Sandaehi, a Korean traditional drama to celebrate the construction of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress in 1797 is played.(14:00 on Saturdays)
