Shall we go fishing on the sea or shall we go fishing in the mountains?
It’s the season of ice fishing, so come to Gyeonggi Province and catch some fish!
To celebrate winter, a number of bingeo (icefish) festivals and winter ice festivals including the Cheongpyeong Ice Flower and Trout Festival, the Jaraseom Singsing Winter Festival, and the Yangpyeong Icefish Festival are waiting for you!
The Cheongpyeong Ice Flower and Trout Festival gets under way between December 25, 2015 and February 14, 2016. Starting on Christmas, the festival continues until Valentine’s Day. There’s something romantic about those dates, right? So of course we recommend the Cheongpyeong Ice Flower and Trout Festival for couples who want to go on a date!
The venue for the Cheongpyeong Ice Flower and Trout Festival boasts a long history as an amusement park close to Seoul. It features a shallow but vast reservoir created by blocking Jojongcheon River, a tributary to the Bukhangang River. In winter, snow and ice covers Homyeongsan Mountain, and its ridges make the festival a perfect destination for couples looking to enjoy activities like sledding or using the ‘Ice Flower Photozone’ on a day out.
On the ice planes below the mountain, you can also drill a hole in the ice and enjoy some trout fishing. It’s a great place to try fresh trout sashimi or grilled trout with your family and friends. The festival also offers plenty of nearby options for children including free fresh water fish (sturgeon, leather carp, silver carp, grass carp) farming at the Inland Fisheries Research Institute.
From January 1 to 31, 2016, enjoy all kinds of winter games at Gapyeongcheon River and its pristine waters! The Jaraseom Singsing Winter Festival offers a total winter package of games including ice fishing for trout, sledding, slide bowling, and mini-golf in the snow, as well as a mini-jazz festival.
In particular, the trout ice fishing site at the Jaraseom Singsing Winter Festival is the largest ice fishing site in Korea; it covers an area equivalent to nine football fields (20,075 pyeong) and is capable of bearing more than 30,000 people on the ice. Fifty tons of yearling trout are released inside the fishing grounds, making it almost like a barrel full of fish.
There’s also a winter playground called the ‘time machine playground’ adjacent to the fishing site where people can enjoy games from the past as well as the present. Activities to help transport you back into your childhood such as sledding, traditional sledding, burlap bobsledding, and an ice banana are available at the playground.
The 5th Mulmalgeun Yangpyeong Icefish Festival gets under way at the Baekdong fishing site and Sumi Village in Danwol-myeon of Yangpyeong County, Gyeonggi Province, between December 24, 2015, and February 21, 2016.
Renowned for a wide variety of activities including smelt fishing and sledding, the highlight of this year’s Mulmalgeun Yangpyeong Icefish Festival is the abundance of food! You can enjoy warm fishcake and roasted chestnuts, and also make your own steamed hot buns and ‘Dalgona’ (caramelized sugar candy). Or you can try ‘Ddeokguk’ (rice cake soup), fried icefish, and icefish sashimi salad for lunch prepared by the local women’s association.
The Mulmalgeun Yangpyeong Icefish Festival is a great place to create great memories for the whole family. Children can create fond memories of their dads pushing and pulling their sleds, couples can create heart-warming winter memories together, and people travelling with colleagues from work can bond while enjoying some icefish sashimi and makgeolli (Korean rice wine). You can visit the Mulmalgeun Yangpyeong Icefish Festival’s official website to make reservations.
Go on an ice fishing trip with your loved ones and have a warm and fun time at the winter festivals of Gyeonggi Province!
