Imjingak Pavilion is only venue in the world where interaction between North Korea and South Korea happens. It’s one of the most popular security-related tourist destinations and visitors can see into the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) as well as other regions in North Korea. Attractions including a Viking pirate ship and a mini-train have been built at Imjingak recently for children, making it a very popular destination for family trips. In addition, the pinwheel hill – the pride of Imjingak Pavilion – as well as the beautiful Pyeonghoa-Nuri Park featuring sculptures and lakes are more than enough to win over the hearts of visitors to Imjingak.

King Jeongjo, the 22nd King of the Joseon Dynasty, built Suwon Hwaseong Fortress when he relocated the tomb of his father, Crown Prince Sado, who fell victim to fierce factional strife at the age of 27, to Suwon which was regarded as the most auspicious region throughout the kingdom.

With walls stretching 5.7km, Hwaseong Fortress was built between 1794 and 1796. By taking advantage of Western technology and using advanced devices like cranes and potter’s wheels devised by Jeong Yak-yong, King Jeongjo was able to complete more than 40 structures in just two short years.

Suwon Hwaseong Fortress is the culmination of Eastern and Western fortress building technology. In 1997, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Banghwasuryujeong was selected as one of the 50 most beautiful places in Korea. Do you remember reading comic books in front of an electric fan on a hot summer day while eating watermelon slices? I think it might be one of the happiest memories you could have in summer. In Bucheon, there’s a museum built just for cartoons and comic books.

At the museum, visitors can learn the history of Korean comics which spans a century, and they can also take a look at some of the more popular works done by several authors. If you first head up to the third floor which has the planned exhibit hall, and learn the history of Korean comics and cartoons before you head down to the other sections of the museum, you’ll have a more informative and enjoyable visiting experience.

The museum also features a comic book library full of comic books you might have wanted to read, so I think it may be the perfect place to visit using public transportation on a midsummer day.

Try ‘Yangpyeong Rail Bike’ for a unique experience

6.jpg Images

Rail bikes running along railway tracks are no longer exclusive to Gangwon Province. Now you can try your hand at rail bikes in Gyeonggi Province near Seoul. The Yangpyeong rail bike was developed using an abandoned railway track. A river flows along the track on one side, and Yongmunsan Mountain stands tall in the background.

So if you head over to try the Yangpyeong rail bike, it’s a great destination to heal yourself with the cool breeze in your face and Yongmunsan Mountain accompanying you during your ride. Yangpyeong is ideal if you want to travel to a quiet place or if you want to spend a great time with your family. If you’re left wanting because your trip was too short and monotonous, take a ride on the rail bike for a unique experience.

Introducing filming locations for dramas and movies in Gyeonggi Province!

Heart of drama and movie filming locations – Gyeonggi Province!

Whenever you watch a movie or a TV drama, you may have had the experience thinking ‘Where is that?’ or “I think I’ve seen that place before somewhere…’ Some beautiful locations in Gyeonggi Province are popular filming sites for movies and dramas because they’re easy to reach and have distinctive, well preserved landscapes. That’s why they’ve earned the spotlight and appear on screen so often.

That’s why we go to those places today! We’ll go and see several well-known movie or drama filming locations in Gyeonggi Province. I’m already excited and curious to get going!

Bidulginang Falls, a mystical place

1.jpg Images

Bidulginang Falls in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province offers mystic yet calm and beautiful scenery. It’s already a well-known filming location for several dramas and movies. The water sparkles like jade and the waterfalls that cascade into the pool after rain impart a feeling of tranquility.

Also, there’s a new campsite next to Bidulginang Falls, so visitors can immerse themselves in the attractions of the falls. It’s one of eight key sights of Pocheon, and you can enjoy the scenery at its peak in September when the autumn leaves have turned color!

2.jpg Images

Drama Queen Seondeok of Silla (left); drama The Slave Hunters (right)

Perhaps because of its ambiance, several historical dramas have been filmed at Bidulginang Falls. Starting with the MBC historical drama Queen Seondeok of Silla, which was the most talked-about drama while it was on air, Bidulginang Falls has appeared in The Slave Hunters, War of Arrows (which brought in ten million viewers), and the SBS historical drama Six Flying Dragons.

3.jpg Images

Movie A Werewolf Boy (left); drama It’s Okay, It’s Love (right)

That doesn’t mean only historical dramas have been filmed at this location. A Werewolf Boy, a movie featuring the love story of a werewolf portrayed by actor Song Joong-ki, and the SBS drama It’s Okay, It’s Love, a heart-warming love story, were filmed at Bidulginang Falls. I think they were both filmed at this location because the unique atmosphere of Bidulginang Falls went well with emotions evoked by love.

Petite France, charming and exotic ambiance

4.jpg Images

This exotic and charming place with European-style architecture that makes you feel like you’re in France, a place offering a wide range of festivals, is Petite France. Not only has this place appeared in various drama series, it has also appeared in several entertainment shows. In particular, the beautiful light fixtures that illuminate the streets at night have helped Petite France become an even more famous filming location at night.

Mostly romantic or passionate scenes have been filmed in Petite France. I think those scenes were so successful because they were able to portray the feeling of Petite France as it is on sight.

5.jpg Images

Drama Beethoven Virus (left); My Love from the Star (right)

The most famous dramas filmed in Petite France are Beethoven Virus and My Love from the Star. These two shows share the fact that the romantic scenes in which the lovers confirmed each other’s feelings were filmed in Petite France.

6.jpg Images

Not only that, Petite France shows up quite frequently in entertainment shows and not just TV dramas. Programs like SBS’s Running Man, where the story of the show is written depending on the location, would probably deem Petite France a more attractive site. It might be the perfect place to tell fairy tales like Snow White or the Little Prince!

Byeokchoji Botanical Garden, a place with ample appeal

7.jpg Images

Located in Paju, Byeokchoji Botanical Garden is one of the best known arboretums in Gyeonggi Province and boasts several attractive features. It feels like a well looked after European garden, and visitors can appreciate the charming appeal of the garden even more through the atmosphere created by the buildings and fixtures.

Because it can create several different moods in one place, rather than just the fresh and lively vibe you normally get from an arboretum, it has become one of the most sought-after locations for various projects.

8.jpg Images

Drama She Was Pretty

When the TV drama She Was Pretty was being filmed, the Chrysanthemum Festival was taking place at Byeokchoji Botanical Garden. At that time, beautiful flowers were in full bloom just like in the screenshot above. As such, the garden is an even more popular destination because it hosts several festivals each season and producers can create different scenes during the night and day.

9.jpg Images

Drama Descendants of the Sun

Above is the scene where Captain Yoo Shi-jin calls Master Sergeant Seo while fishing in the TV hit Descendants of the Sun. Did you know that the scene was shot in Byeokchoji Botanical Garden? At first glance, it looks like a reservoir or a river. I think the director was able to film the scene at Byeokchoji Botanical Garden because the garden offers a completely different ambiance at one location.

10.jpg Images

Drama Deep Rooted Tree (left); Mirror of the Witch (right)

You can see the different sides of Byeokchoji Botanical Garden through how it appears in historical dramas. The teaser clips of the drama Mirror of the Witch as well as Deep Rooted Tree were also filmed at Byeokchoji Botanical Garden. If you’re looking for a place with plenty of different appeal that doesn’t seem to get old, I recommend Byeokchoji Botanical Garden!

So far, I have introduced places across Gyeonggi Province that are being spotlighted as filming locations for movies, dramas, and entertainment shows. I think you might enjoy your movies even more if you know where they were filmed. Apart from the locations above, several productions are being shot all over Gyeonggi Province, so I strongly recommend that you go beyond seeing them on TV and actually go visit them!

A day out at the museum with your children

eng.jpg Images

This May and June, construction of two children’s museums in Gyeonggi Province, in Goyang City and Dongducheon City, will be completed.

The two children’s museums in northern Gyeonggi Province are ‘experiential and educational cultural venues’ that are expected to be extremely popular among children.

In the past, there weren’t enough cultural venues in northern Gyeonggi. Accordingly, Gyeonggi Province began a project in 2011 to build children’s museums in its northern regions !

As a result, the Dongducheon Children’s Museum officially opened on May 4, and the Goyang Children’s Museum, which is currently undergoing test operations, will officially open in June.

First, the Dongducheon Children’s Museum

2.jpg Images

The Dongducheoni Children’s Museum is located at 162, Sangbongam-dong. Construction began in August of 2014 on the building (two levels above ground and one level below ground) and was completed in March of 2016. After a provisional opening on April 15, the museum officially opened to the public at 10:00AM on May 4.

The most distinctive feature of this museum is its design under a common thematic concept of ‘children dreaming in the forest’; the entire museum was built to help children feel like they’re on an adventure.

The exhibition halls are divided into six areas: the Dinosaur Zone, Infant Zone, Climber Zone, Forest Ecosystem Zone, Water Activity Zone, and Architecture Zone. They are built so as to enable children to touch and experience the exhibits.

Children can interact with their favorite dinosaurs or learn the value of nature and experience how animals build their homes!

The visitor numbers are limited per session in order to ensure a pleasant visiting environment, so it is advisable to book your tickets online before coming to the museum.

Opening hours: 10:00~18:00 *Museum is open for five 90-minute sessions per day (300 visitors per session)

Admission fee: Individuals KRW 4,000, Groups (20 or more visitors) KRW 3,000, Dongducheon residents KRW 2,000

Visitor inquiries: 031-860-2860

Address: 46, Pyeonghwa-ro 2910beon-gil, Dongducheon-si, Gyeonggi Province

Second, Goyang Children’s Museum

3.jpg Images

The Goyang Children’s Museum is set to open at 1003, Hwajeong-dong, Deogyang-gu. Construction began in May of 2014 on the building (three levels above ground and one level below ground) and was completed in March of 2016. After a provisional opening on May 5, the museum is slated to officially open in early June.

The museum has ten exhibition halls: the Ggothyanggi Maeul (floral scent village), A World We Live Together – Hello Earth!, Mulbit Maeul (watercolor village), Baby Forest, Baby Tree, Ani-factory, Architecture Playground, Art Gallery, and We Promise Your Safety. The facilities were designed under a common theme of ‘children who grow hand-in-hand with the world’.

Of particular note, the exhibition halls were created based on a story line that sends the message of understanding ‘differences’ and experiencing ‘us’.

Much like the image of Goyang as a floral city, children can pot plants and flowers themselves at ‘Ggothyanggi Maeul’, and experience how animations are created at ‘Ani-factory’. They can also use model blocks to build and understand buildings at the ‘Architecture Playground’. With all these programs to capture the hearts of children, aren’t you excited about the Goyang Children’s Museum?

The Goyang Children’s Museum will host an opening event from June 4 to June 6 right before its official opening date on June 7. The museum is planning to open experiential booths for various performances like juggling, magic, and music as well as other activities during the event.

Guests planning to visit the museum during the opening event and on opening day can book their tickets online for free through the Goyang Children’s Museum website until May 22.

Opening hours: 10:00-18:00 *Museum is open for five 90-minute sessions per day (for individual visitors, four 150-minute sessions per day for groups), number of people per session is limited to 200~250 individual visitors (400 on weekends), 200 group visitors

Admission fee: Individuals KRW 5,000, Groups (20 or more visitors) KRW 3,500, children under 36 months old are free

Visitor inquiries: 031-839-0300

Address: 26, Hwajeong-ro, Deogyang-gu, Goyang-si, Gyeonggi Province (1003, Hwajeong-dong)

Children’s museums are expected to provide ample experiences and fun to children! We hope you look forward to it!

Best 5 evening tourist hot spots – Beautiful starry nights in Gyeonggi Province

When you were little, did you ever look up into the starry night sky and dream about it? Did you ever close your eyes after seeing a shooting star and make a wish? Today, it’s true that it has become ‘practically impossible’ to see stars in the night sky because of all the bright city lights and the polluted atmosphere.

In northern Gyeonggi, a region that boasts a well-preserved natural environment, you’ll be able to find beautiful evening hotspots featuring stars clearly visible in the night sky. Shall we go and find out where in Gyeonggi Province you can travel to if you want to see stars shining brightly in the sky?

1. Art Valley Astronomical Science Museum

1.jpg Images

(Image source: Chang Hye-ri’s Social Locker)

Known as a comprehensive cultural venue, Pocheon Art Valley is an up-and-coming landmark in Pocheon that incorporates an abandoned stone quarry. This abandoned stone quarry, with what appeared to be a patch of useless land, was developed into a venue for culture and art.

The Astronomical Science Museum, from which people can observe stars in the night sky, has opened in Pocheon Art Valley. The museum is attracting many people as a place to observe stars in the clear sky of Pocheon, a city in northern Gyeonggi renowned for its pristine natural environment.

The Art Valley Astronomical Science Museum has been designed so as to enable visitors to engage in activities on each floor. The first floor offers features through which visitors can learn about the Earth we live on including its birth and structure. If you walk up to the second floor while enjoying the Hubble Space Telescope, you can experience the constellations of each season via a motion sensor system. Visitors can learn about the planets in our solar system as well as different types of space telescopes; this is something they can’t see on an everyday basis. They can also see stars using an infrared system and space voyage simulator.

Additionally, the planetarium – which shows 4D stereoscopic image and constellations – offers nine shows a day. Visitors who wish to participate in these sessions can receive free tickets on the first floor. There are six telescopes on the astronomical observatory on the rooftop. You can observe the sun and other celestial bodies, so I’d recommend a visit if you want to really learn about stars rather just look at them.

You can take a cyber tour via the Pocheon Art Valley Astronomical Science Museum website before you go, so please take a look.

2. Sanjeong Lake

3.jpg Images

(Image source: Gyeonggi Tourism Organization (web portal))

Sanjeong Lake is one of the most famous lakes in northern Gyeonggi. It was named ‘Sanjeong’ because the lake resembles a ‘well (‘jeong’) in the middle of a mountain (‘san’)’. Originally an irrigation reservoir built in 1925, it’s beautiful scenery surrounded by beautiful rocky mountains helped it become a major vacation spot.

Accordingly, Sanjeong Lake is known as a mecca for water sports and as an ice sledding venue in winter. It’s a great destination for family vacations. In addition, the area offers great access to restaurants near Sanjeong Lake as well as tourist destinations like the National Arboretum and Herb Island. Therefore, it’s a nice vacation spot for you to visit.

Not only that, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery at night, which is as beautiful as the view during the day, and starts in the sky. A combination of the lake and starlight in the night sky… Isn’t that so romantic?

3. Herb Island

5.jpg Images

Herb Island began as an herb garden in Pocheon City back in 1998, but has now become a tourist attraction with a wide range of things to see and enjoy including an indoor herb garden, outdoor garden, herb restaurant, and herb café. At the ‘Herb Village’, you can enjoy herbal flowers such as rosemary, lavender, geranium, and jasmine all year long.

The reason why Herb Island’s nightscape is so beautiful is because it hosts a Light Festival featuring three million lights from November to March. The colorful glittering lights on the ground and stars in the sky create a beautiful scene you won’t forget.

I recommend that you visit Herb Island, where you can enjoy the indoor garden with numerous herbs and taste various dishes using a wide range of herbs on a sunny spring day, and take in a beautiful nightscape during the night.

4. Hantangang River Tourism District

7.jpg Images

(Night view of the Hantangang River auto campsite, source: Hantangang River campsite)

The Hantangang River tourism district (located in Jeongok-ri, Yeoncheon, Gyeonggi Province) is a well-known vacation spot since being designated as a tourist location in 1977. In particular, it was reorganized as an eco-friendly, family culture, and recreational tourist location with close ties to projects to take advantage of the region’s historical and cultural attractions since restoration of the prehistoric site in 2005.

With the Hantangang River auto campsite stretching 1.5km between Hantangyo Bridge and Saranggyo Bridge, the Hantangang River tourist district offers plenty of attractions including shops, sport fields, an outdoor concert hall, places for water games, a children’s character hall, and Hantangang River Children’s Traffic Land. It offers so much that a single day isn’t enough.

In particular, hidden locations that hold geological significance and the beauty of stars in the clear night sky near Hantangang River, which begins in Pyeonggang County in North Korea and flows all the way through Cheolwon County and Pocheon City to reach Jeongok-ri, are more than enough to impress you. I recommend that you stop at different spots along Hantangang River and put the cherry on top of your trip to Hantangang River looking at the stars at night.

5. Yumyeongsan Mountain natural Recreation Forest

9.jpg Images

(Source: Gyeonggi Tourism Organization (web portal), Writer: Gangbuknyeo)

Opened in 1989, Yumyeongsan Mountain natural recreation forest is a tourist destination inside the entrance of the Yumyeongsan Mountain valley. More specifically, it’s located in Gail-ri of Seorak-myeon, Gapyeong County. The recreation forest, featuring a natural forest zone with oak trees as well as an artificial forest zone with larches and nut pines, invites visitors to enjoy the soothing scenery and a walk through the forest.

Also, the uniquely shaped rocks, the valley, and other things to see in the forest surrounding the hiking trail show you the joy of visiting the forest. Moreover, the forest offers the perfect break from your exhausting day with a romantic log cabin as well as amenities like an auto campsite, a place for forest therapy, a campfire site, and an exercise zone.

At night, you can enjoy the nightscape under the skylight inside the forest full of tall trees, so I recommend a trip to Yumyeongsan Mountain natural recreation forest this weekend!

Come to Gwangmyeong Cave, soon to be a world-caliber tourist destination~

I went to a cave in Gyeonggi Province! What am I talking about? I’m talking about Gwangmyeong Cave!

1.jpg Images

2.jpg Images

Opened in 1912 under the name Gahak Mine, Gwangmyeong Cave used to be the only mine in the Korean capital region for gold, silver, and copper. In 2011, Gwangmyeong City bought the mine, which had been abandoned in 1972, reinforced it and opened an art center inside the mine. This was part of the city’s efforts to restructure the environment of Gahaksan Mountain and develop the site as a new cultural and artistic tourism resource.

Did you know the fact that 1.9 million people visited the Cave between July 2011 when it opened and December 2015?

3.jpg Images

You can get there using public transportation. Take bus no. 17 from Exit no. 2 of Cheolsan Station and travel 30 to 40 minutes to arrive at Gwangmyeong Cave.

The Snow and Light Festival is taking place inside and outside of Gwangmyeong Cave Theme Park until February 28. It’s your chance to see some fantastic holograms and laser performances!

4.jpg Images

Gwangmyeong Cave has been refurbished so that people can enjoy the cave regardless of gender or age. You can experience various activities, explore the cool cave, watch concerts, and even tour the wine cave if you’re an adult who enjoys wine!

Aqua World, where you can meet various sea creatures, is a popular course for tourists as well!

5.jpg Images

If you enter the cave, you can see beautiful illuminations that light up the cave.

It’s thrilling to see illuminated sculptures in different places inside the cave.

It takes roughly 1 hour to tour the cave! Once you finish your tour, you can join activities outside Gwangmyeong Cave or explore Gwangmyeong City.
