Suwon Hwaseong Fortress is not just one of the key historic sites of Gyeonggi Province but also a World Heritage Site designated by UNESCO. Hwaseong is well known for paths along the fortress walls in the middle of the city that look beautiful at night. The fortress is also historically significant in that it was built by King Jeongjo in memory of his father, Crown Prince Sado, during the late Joseon Dynasty using ‘geojunggi’ (crane), the most advanced technology of that time, that were developed by Jeong Yak-yong. Today, when the sun sets at Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, you can enjoy a park stretching along the fortress wall that is lit by beautiful light fixtures. It’s a great destination for those who love taking in nightscapes, and it’s also a fantastic photo spot for couples.
It’s so romantic that, if you mount the walls of Hwaseong Fortress and look at Suwon’s nightscape, you’ll have no choice but to fall in love. In particular, Banghwasuryujeong, which is one of the highlights of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, is famous for its beautiful view throughout the year regardless of the season. Banghwasuryujeong is the name of one of four pavilions of Suwon Hwaseong; it is located in the northeast section of the fortress. It was built on a spot that offers a superlative view. It was built to help guard against enemies during times of war, but now with the small lake called Yongyeon outside the walls, it has been transformed into a place that looks like a scene from an oriental painting.
