Place of Aegi’s Sorrow and Division

The name stems from the kisaeng Aegi who died on its peak pining for a high-ranking official kidnapped during the Joseon Manchu War. In 1968, President Park visited Aegi Peak and inscribed Aegi Peak by hand, declaring that the regret of Aegi equaled the regret of Korea’s displaced people. Every year on Chuseok, displaced people hold a service for their ancestors and wish for the reunification of Korea on Mangbae-dan.

The History of the Han River Downstream

Aegi Peak reflects the sadness of Koreans and their wish for reunification, but is being reborn as a place where people can learn the history and culture of the Han River downstream. Jo River as seen from Aegi Peak, sooths visitors. Jo River joins the Imjin River that runs past North Korea and far-away Yeseong and Yeomha Rivers, which are partially ocean waters, and feature Yu Island, a resting place for birds that dwell between the two Koreas. The Jo River is a reminder of the old ships with yellow masts that used to come to Seoul at high tide.
